Your pet is a substitue tank. What would you do if you had no pet and a barb in squad? You wouldn't have the barb aggro a mob and you attack a different mob, you would have the barb grab aggro on both and the attack the same one as the barb, kill it, then both switch to attacking the second mob while they aggro. Same with your pet, have your pet attack and round up the mobs, attack the same one as the pet as to not pull aggro.

It rather depends on what you're doing, what you want to do and what pet you have.

If it's a Hercules, your best bet is to gather all mobs together and wait a few moments till reflect generates aggro for the pet. Afterwards go ahead and AOE. Chances are you'll still steal aggro anyway but you can hold back once in a while and have pet switch targets often.

If it's any other tank pet you can still gather mobs and constantly have your pet change target to generate aggro. Unlike with Hercules, you will have to make sure every mob has been attaked by your pet at least once before you heal it. There will be less mobs and a higher chance to steal aggro so you'll have to be careful, hold back and wait inbetween the AOEs. It's not that bad though.

If it's a DPS/debuff pet you'll have to attack the same mob as your pet. However, if you can kill a mob before reaching or or you can take the hits and provided that your pet can survive a mob without the need of constant heals you can have the pet attack a mob and you can attack a different one.

You can still AOE with a DPS pet if you can take hits but that's another story...

In squads you'll want to be attacking the same mob as the tank unless you can hold your own in squad and kill a mob by yourself. I usually do that to magic mobs or ranged mobs that (more often than not are walkers) and pop out of nowhere and attack the Barbarian/Seeker/Blademaster. Since it's not in their AOE range, I might as well go attack it and kill it or bring it to the AOE range of the tank. The pet kills the same mob as me there.

Normally, yeah - attack the one your pet is tanking.
the exception is if you're fighting really weak mobs for some reason - then just wipe the floor with them as fast as you can.
(For example, with snowmen, or mouse bashing, I usually set my pet to 'stay' at almost max distance from me, so we can hold a much larger area clear)

Actually, with a Herc after you should tab through the mobs and have the herc attack any with relatively high health, trying to ensure all have been bashed (or whatever aggro skill you've put on it) at least once. Reflect really doesn't generate much aggro.

If I'm fighting in the outside world (out of an instance) usually the mobs are weak enough that I can solo one in the same time/quicker than my nix. If I'm in TT/BH's we work together because those mobs are significantly harder. So I guess as a rule of thumb I use it would be if you can kill a mob in under 4-5 hits (amount of times you can hit a mob before it reaches you to hit you back) you should each do a mob. If you need more than that you should fight with the pet.
