You can get Windows 7 Ultimate for about $85
    Vista ultimate is about $120

    Go figure.

Concerning the problem the OP has with the ticketing system:

I had this problem too. Then I discovered that after you choose a server in the drop down list, you have to go to the bottom of the drop down list and select the confirm button. Which is *really* easy to not see - the new ticketing system has a bit of a fail layout, as far as I'm concerned.

My W7 machine has a random app pause problem and maybe once every 3 months will blue screen. Vista on it, absolutely no issues.

On this computer, I bought a new hard drive and W7. After the installation, while I was installing applications, I turned off UAC, but I still had to run some install programs as admin, and sometimes had to try reinstalling several times before it would take. Also, Windows Live wouldn't display youtube video in the messenger window, no matter what I tried to do. I gave up and went back to Vista because I was tired of the issues I was having just trying to set up a new installation.

Also, I've run Vista since it came out. I ran that Windows Experience program for 3 months on XP and recieved a free copy of Vista Ultimate when it came out. It had the initial file transfer bug and other common issues that went away before SP1. It's now running SP2. This installation has remained on 24/7 for up to 3 months at a time. It's almost as stable as my old XP system.

But that's just for me, a home computer junkie who even built an Elf 2 with my dad back in the early 80's.

Sheeple think Vista sucks because when it was first introduced, it did have a couple of major bugs. It was also the first version of UAC which hadn't been fined tuned and was really horrible. Also, just like XP, Vista at launch, was preloaded on a whole bunch of OEM systems with extra added bloatware that barely met system requirements for it so many people's first experience with it was that it was buggy and slow because it was put on so many low end machines.

I've always had Vista on high-end machines. Even from the beginning it was pretty great once the file transfer bug was fixed. UAC was still a problem for most people, but of course I turn that off... who doesn't?

BTW, there's really little difference between Vista SP2 and W7 SP1. With the exception of a few kernel changes and a few UI changes and reworked system configuration menus for some Control Panel items, they're basically the same if you have UAC turned off.

W7 is only a minor revision of the Vista code base and probably should have just been a Service Pack. The only thing is that Vista was hated for the reasons I outlined and they wanted to sell "a whole new, better and different OS". So they made minor UI tweaks and gave it a different name so they could re-sell the product everyone hated with a name they didn't hate. And it worked.

    This proves my point:

    /clueless

W2K was the most stable operating system next to NT4. Thank you for proving my point though.

BTW, almost everyone hated XP at launch. And SP2 hosed many thousands of people's systems. Most IT departments refused to upgrade from NT or W2K and many of them still run W2K to this date.

I'm speaking from a tech support point of view. Been dealing with every MS and Mac OS for the past 15 years for the company I work for and in my experiences I have had the MOST problems with ME and Vista, the least with 98, XP, and Windows 7. NT4 while more stable than 95 at the time of it's release, had an incredibly large amount of incompatibility issues and was one of the systems MOST pron to the blue screen of death. All Windows 2000 editions was, was NT once they got all the bugs fixed. And I will agree W2k was very good, but got replaced by XP in every business that the company I work for owns.

So I'm guessing when you said /clueless you were referring to yourself.

If you don't like Vista, there's really nothing in Windows 7 that you should like as they're basically the same. It's a lot like saying the iPhone 4 sucks, but the iPhone 4s is awesome.

W2K was amazing. My W2K system's longest runtime was over a year. My XP average about 6 months before crashing. My Vista system about 3-4 months. W7, about the same.

XP received basically the same reception that Vista did at launch. Nearly everyone hated it because it was bloatware and ran horribly on the low end OEM systems, especially laptops, that it was bundled with. Pretty much every major corporation publicly announced that it was refusing to upgrade to XP due to all the issues it had. After a few years acceptance became wider as systems became faster. Seriously, you don't remember any of this do you? lol

And yeah, I guess my degree in system and network administration means I'm a clueless end-user.

    /facepalm

I was also an early adopter of XP and I'm saying the same stuff about Vista now that I did about XP then. It was awesome if you had the system to run it, otherwise it completely sucked.

And XP was awesome. When I upgraded to it I basically threw away a $2000 Epson (in 1990's rate) commercial document scanner because it was unsupported. That was a great memory. :P
I post in forums. This one and others. That's why I post.

I wasn't calling you clueless. I meant to throw a question mark at the end of that statement.

The point being, I have sufficient experience (as do you) with the various OS's that have been around. So if you were calling me clueless based on a lack of knowledge, that would be incorrect. My experience's with a few of the OS's has been different from yours. That's not unheard of, so i can accept that you may have had good results where I had bad, and vice versa.

We both have degrees so we are obviously competent enough on the matter. I was more referring to experiences I have had on a large scale at work. Not experiences with my personal computers. Not news or reviews published by any source. I thought I had made that clear in my first sentence.

And yes I remember the hesitation and refusal of companies to switch to XP. I never indicated a time frame upon when the switch was made, nor did I say it was immediate. However I don't recall it being years before the switch was finally made. Maybe 8-10 months for us? And that's about normal, who switches to a product upon it's initial release anyways? I don't know of any company that doesn't wait for the expected bugs to be fixed first.

As for my actual experiences with my home computers, on one of my desktops, Win 7 has been running for 1 year and 2 months without any shut downs or restarts. (It's my PC I use for downloading) I haven't had any issues. In comparison I had lots of issues with vista on that computer's predecessor.

And I think W2K may have been my longest running personal computer OS as well. I cant remember exactly, but I want to venture a guess around 2 years running without a shutdown/restart and no issues of course.

As for your Iphone analogy, I have no clue. I'm a Droid man myself. b:victory

Ah, ok. My apologies. I did make a few assumptions. lol

And, I will agree that from a support perspective, anything that requires you to do more than you think you should have to do really sucks.

Yeah, well once I got a good job in IT, I realized that I didn't like it. I'm a computer enthusiast and after having worked on them I would come home and not want to see a computer at all. So, I quit and started working construction and never looked back.

That's pretty good for W7. Mine seems to have an issue with sleeping that my Vista system doesn't even though they're both configured to run the same, only turning off the monitor (and nothing else).

    Go figure. lol

edit: this convo kinda makes me sad. I used to make so much money from consulting side jobs before the dot com bubble burst... blah

o.O I had that same annoyance with Win 7 at first. I fixed it somehow but I can't remember what I did lol.

And funny enough, I worked construction before going IT lol. Great money but I don't like being on the road away from my family so much. AMEC/Kamtech was the company. Mainly Industrial and I was a sparky.

Haha... see, I'm not just making that kinda stuff up. lol Also have a random application 'pause'. Not the typical type, but a random lockup for about 2-3 minutes after where it would either resume or crash with a "close or report" message. I do get that in Vista with Yahoo Messenger sometimes, but that's the only app.

    lol.

I started as a helper, then ran my own crew, became foreman and then interim division manager for one of the largest residential/commercial remodeling companies in my area. I quit to take care of my mother after my dad passed away.

I couldn't stand being indoors for 8-10 hours a day and much preferred being on the road. And even after I left IT, I still did consulting and maintenance for a few people and a couple of diff small businesses, but I got to handpick my side jobs. This was before the dotcom burst when you could basically charge anything you wanted to. Money literally grew on trees back then.

I can't submit a ticket either, but only on this account. It started right after they updated the PWI site. The submit ticket page went from having a white background, to it's current look. I've tried on 3 browser, including firefox, IE and chrome and I can't submit a ticket. A couple weeks ago I made a new account, and just out of curiosity I clicked on submit ticket and the page loaded fine. I then signed out of that account and signed into this account, took me less than 30 seconds, went to submit a ticket and it did not work. Exact same browser. I emailed to customer service telling them this, and I got an email back saying they received it. Then a few days ago I got another email saying the it had been closed because I did not respond to the solution. But I never received a solution. I was checking my email every day, and I didn't get any other response until the message saying it had been closed. I checked my spam folder as well, and there was nothing. Only thing I can figure is a couple months back I changed my email, I get all the PWI news updates sent to the right email, but I'm wondering if the solution for some reason was sent to the old email address, which makes me wonder if my account glitched, is out of date or something. I really don't know how games work, but I'm guessing account also have to be updated, and maybe mine didn't.

Talk about Irony. Win 7 just crashed with a BSOD. Might have been an overheating issue though, it sounds like one of my fans is dying.

Edit: BTW my apologies to the OP for completely derailing your thread =\

LMAO! Sorry, that is a bit funny all things considered... b:pleased

I recently had to diagnose an intermittent lockup on this system that either appeared to be bad memory or motherboard. Taking it apart and reassembling it didn't help. Long story short, I almost bought a second computer's worth of components trying to troubleshoot the problem. Changing the memory, then the motherboard didn't help. I ended up taking the new components out, returning them, putting the whole system back together again and took it to a tech shop I have faith in to diagnose. It turns out nothing was wrong with it. They turned it on and it was working flawlessly. Since then, it's had about a week of uptime without a single issue. :\

No need to. It was basically a troll thread. If there's a problem with support you PM a GM or Admin or start a thread in the Technical Support forum.

anyway, apparently my PM didn't send and no one checks technical support. lmao. you know that. b:laugh
