I came back from school and found my Dad shocked in front of the TV. We watched the second plane hit and the towers collapse shortly after. Remembering those who had fallen that day and those who died trying to rescue them...

I don't live in the US, as shocking as it may seem. Was it Sunday 10 years ago? I don't remember.
I come from a country that's "used" to terror, but I remember I still found the events terrifying...

I was getting my kids ready for school, with the news on the TV, and saw that a plane had hit the first tower. i thought, like all did then, that it was an accident. but my son, who is now 19, called out in shock, "MOM, another plane hit the other tower!" I sat all day watching, convinced it was the beginning of WW 3, and in tears, wondering what next would happen.
A song for those who we all lost that day, and for those left behind..ChaoticShelly wrote: »I came back from school and found my Dad shocked in front of the TV. I was in 5th grade then when it happen. I was too young to understand the toll it took on a lot of ppl as well, it was my birthday, that was the only thing I was anxious for. When I head to school, a lot of my teachers had the T.V. on. Seeing CNN and FOX News replaying clips of the destruction. School wasn't school that day, the teachers were quiet, the students were nervous, asking a lot of questions and such.
A few days later, I think, a nation-wide event took place at many many schools, it was a simple one, just say the Pledge of Allegiance at I think....10 or 11 am, outside of class, as a school.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

was in first grade, barely remember a thing
cousin called from America and told me that a plane just crashed into the North tower, but i thought it was a joke
turned the TV on to prove him wrong...just in time to see the South tower go down
and little first-grade me thought it was all special effects, like a trailer for some upcoming movie or something b:cold[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

When you grow up in southern California of the 1960s, your school has fire drills, earthquake drills and nuclear attack drills. My husband made me send the kids to school that day, i wanted to keep them downstairs where we go during tornados...our best place during any attack. I wasnt thinking straight that day...school, and a normal day was likely best for them.
If i ever get a chance, i want to make a pilgrimage to the towers place, and Shanksville, PA...to leave mementos, to touch the stones, the names.Knownase - Heavens Tear wrote: »I was in 5th grade then when it happen. I was in my math class and I remember the news was on in the background, like it always was. And my math teacher was being his usually goofy self, when the first tower hit. At that point, we thought it was an accident so he continued on with the lesson as planned albeit more reserved. When the second one hit, he just ran a hand through his hair and sat down at his desk. I remember in shock, but not really knowing what exactly it was I was witnessing. I was only 13 at the time, after all. I just remember knowing it was terrifying by his reaction. He was usually so cheerful but he looked terrified and shaken up, he kept messing up his hair, and sat down and watched the news instead of teaching. I remember even sitting on top of my desk to get a better angle on the tv (a lot of us did) and he didn't even care. It was really quiet after that and when I went home my mom was really upset, because my dad was planning on reenlisting into the military when it happened. I didn't want him to, but he was so determined to do it. He felt like anyone who backed out now that the country needed them when they were planning to join in peace, never deserved to wear the uniform anyway. I didn't want him to join though, because I realized then that it was going to be war and that my I might lose my dad. Really hard day that was and I'll always remember it. Thankfully, my dad even though he did get sent overseas (to Iraq of all places b:lipcurl)made it back and is now officially retired.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Theres been bigger disasters with more devastating effects.
Stop blowing this thing into such a big deal, the only people who should be crying are those involved, either directly or by being related / close friends with victims.0 -

A disaster is a disaster, and this one was a national tragedy that cost many lives and affected the United States as a whole. It didn't just affect the people in the towers. And even if it had, there is nothing wrong with empathizing with people.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

i was 11 back then. even when the 2 hit i thought it was just a accident. it wasnt until later in the day when i knew/understood what was actually going on. i didnt go to to school that day or the day after.
my mom is a very paranoid person and i used that to my advantage to miss a few days of schoolb:chuckle
all of that aside tho it was pretty tragic. but the "unity" that we had on that day and the week after didnt last long. today the only ppl that actually give a **** are the ppl that live in new york/families that were affected where as everyone else doesnt really care anymore. its a shame really. but when they killed bin laden everyone "united" for a brief period once again, but that didnt last long either.
in terms of disasters hurricane katrina was probally equal to 9/11. but not many ppl care about that either. the earthquake over in japan was even bigger and affected an entire country rather then just a city, yet ppl (americans in particular) dont care. infact some americans even went as far as saying japan got what they deserved because of pearl harbor. its kinda sickening and utterly disgusting really.0 -

.......really? Did you really just say that? I am astounded by the amount of immaturity, hatred and ignorance that you carry with you.
I wanted to share a picture of mine that I took last year from a memorial in Tempe, AZ. In reflection, I like to think this photo as a notion that the sorrow, and the memory of what happened, will trickle down through the generations, as it does in so many other parts of the world when any tragic event happens.

this is the kinda of ignorance im talking about. do you know the kind of impact the earthquake in japan had? dont be oblvious to the rest of the world.0 -
The Japanese, the Idoesasions... people all over the world are joining our country in mourning. I saw a display in Japan, made of lights, in which the Japanese are honouring and mourning those who died in the earthquake, and on 9-11-01. So yes, the rest of the world cares.rainbowyoshii wrote: »this is the kinda of ignorance im talking about. do you know the kind of impact the earthquake in japan had? dont be oblvious to the rest of the world.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Ignorance? Did you not know that the attacks on 9-11 were not just on Americans, but on the entire world? There were people from many countries in those towers, in the pentagon, from different backgrounds, religions, regions.
I am well aware that there are other horrors that have happened that may outweigh the attacks in death count, but it wouldn't kill you to show a little compassion and respect for the many that the terrorist threats have affected. It is because of human ignorance and lack of respect that those people died for in the first place.
I wish you the best of luck on your journey to waking up, growing up, and realizing the meaning of being a living, breathing, human being on this planet.0 -
rainbowyoshii wrote: »this is the kinda of ignorance im talking about. do you know the kind of impact the earthquake in japan had? dont be oblvious to the rest of the world.
Ignorance? 9/11/2011 had far more far reaching implications than just the total body count of the people that died that day. It catapulted the United States and some of it's allies into war, it strengthened the terrorist networks which made them bolder resulting on further attacks on cities, such as Madrid. It impacted tourism, travel and entertainment stocks and is partially is to blame for the economic downturn that the united states is facing. When the US economy went into a downturn, other countries who were trading partners were impacted. The earthquake in Japan was also devastating, but it's not unnatrual or ignorant for Americans to take a moment to remember one of the most significant events in modern history on it's 10th anniversary. The United States is also part of the world, and ignoring events in it just because the rest of the world matters too is just as ignorant.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

yes but i wonder if america does the same for all of the other disaters in the world that has happened. for example hurricane katrina or haiti. no one seems to mourne for the lives lost during the anniversaries of those disaters. which was the point i was making./polIo - Sanctuary wrote: »Ignorance? and who says i dont have compassion? you seem to have it backwards. what i want is for americans to wake up and care for the rest of the world instead of just care for one event that just so happened to affect them directly.

You read me wrong
It was a disaster, it sucks those people all got killed, but 7 years (If not more, im not sure and dont care) of "being sad" about it is just pathetic. Hiroshima doesnt get this much worldwide "empathy" and it was miles worse.0 -
rainbowyoshii wrote: »this is the kinda of ignorance im talking about. do you know the kind of impact the earthquake in japan had? dont be oblvious to the rest of the world.
The only person showing ignorance right now is you. Today is 9-11, just because people dedicate their time to remember those who were killed today, doesn't mean they don't acknowledge other deaths and disasters that occurred in other counties and dates. The people killed in the 9-11 attacks were of all races, genders and religions, not just Americans.
Do not turn this respectful topic into a debate and don't derail it any further, be respectful to those who are here to share their thoughts about this day.
