    Um...I may be wrong here...But.............................There's North America, (the continent...) Then there's the USA, Canada, and Mexico.....She's not American, she's Canadian.

    I'm pretty sure a lot of people would be pissed off if Justin Bieber was actually an American.

    She IS Canadian. Just like Russians are Russians, even though Russia lies in Asia.

    Canadian chick = 1
    You = 0

    Eh , you are just like her . . . If i live in Germany , i'm German but at the same time I'm European
    When you say someone is American it means someone lives in America (continent)

    My French professor told me that Mexicans dislike the fact that Americans (United States people) call themselves Americans because the term should be used for anyone who lives in the America's. So Mexicans would call "Americans" -- "United State'sers".

    I dislike this logic because North America and South America are two entirely different continent and so to just say well its all America is stupid. She might be North American, but she isn't American. American refers to the end part of United States of America which is the only area in the region that's proper name only uses the term America without any directional attachment. Mexico, USA, and Canada are all North Americans. United Statesers sounds stupid and doesn't flow well. Besides the US part describes the type of government, not the name of the country's people, hence Americans. Just like North Koreans and South Koreans aren't all just Koreans. You can technically and grammatically call them that all you want. But I think if you just referred to the politics of North Korea as Korean politics, there would be a lot of angry South Koreans. Those distinctions do matter and here you can't shorten the name in that way without understandable irritation from the people who are unjustly lumping together.

    Also the reason Mexicans get upset is because of historical discrimination against them, where Canada and the United States were considered white nation and someone to trade with. Whereas Mexico was considered to be something to try and conquer. They want to been as just as valid and legitimate power wise as USA and Canada. However, in this instance they are clouding the two issues. The language barrier may be partially to blame, but it makes little since to call Americans anything but what they are already called; grammatically speaking. This is because United States is technically the type of government, and America is the name of the country. Together the proper title is United States of America, and was often abbreviated by title rather than by name. So much so that the title became the name officially. That didn't change what you called the people who lived within the US though.
