Refining delete socketed gem?

I don't remember where I read or hear this, but there was a warning about either losing already socketed gems when you refine an item, or losing refinement on an item when you imbue gems into sockets. Is anything like that true that I should watch out for?

Not that I can recall. I generally shard my items before refining them and I have never lost the gems I put in. Or vice versa. Refining can fail, in which case you have to start at +1 again.

That's how JD works but not for PWI.

If you Imbue shards into a gear piece you will not lost it if you try to refine that piece and viceversa.
The only way to clean the piece is with the 'purify' option at the correct craft npc that just will remove the shards never the refine.

Refining has absolutely nothing to do with your gems in the sockets.

Refine your armor/gear/ornaments to your heart's content.
