Untamed Classes

This may be a very silly, and stupid question, but I was wondering about the gender restrictions is on the "Untamed" Classes. I am a male, ans am currently working on a "Mystic". I really enjoy having a pet to tank and fight along side me, but I would really enjoy being able to "capture" my own. My friend is female, and really wanted to play as the "Barbarian" Class, but we both have reservations about playing the opposite gender. So, if someone wouldn't mind explaining to me why they put the gender restrictions on just that race, it would be VERY much appreciated!b:pleased

Well to start I'd like to point out that asking a question about "Why" the game developers did something is probably unlikely to yield an answer as:
1. We can't read minds and therefore if it wasn't disclosed we won't know
2. You'd need a reply from a moderator, admin, etc. who knows. Which is ofcourse unlikely as they're out doing their moderating, admin, and etcetera-ing.
As for my answer for your question? They wanted to make it REAAAALLY awkward when a barb/or other male character walks up and hits on you. If you can't bare it then don't play a veno. As for the whole "Pet" aspect it's really not all that amazing (I was wowed by the concept at first too) in reality you'll look up a guide and get one or two of the pets it recommends and use it for pretty much ever.0 -
I think I read somewhere that the gender restrictions of the untamed class are based on chinese mythology.
Edit: Even found something: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huli_jing (Quote: "The fox spirits encountered in tales and legends are usually females and appear as young, beautiful women.") I didn't find anything on the barb, though.0 -
i've said it before, but i actually like the gender locking. it puts a bit of distance between you and your character, and puts another element of play into the game. fantasy video gaming is inherently escapist, which means it's not SUPPOSED to be realistic; this helps support that.
and playing as the opposite gender is no big deal. half of humanity is whatever gender you are not, and they're just people too. the fact that my veno main is not the same gender i am has no real impact on how i play the game.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] Heaven's Tear alts: KenLubin, Sou_Hon, JudyCaraco --- level 5x chars.0 -
About Tigers:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger
Of great importance in Chinese myth and culture, the tiger is one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. Also in various Chinese art and martial art, the tiger is depicted as an earth symbol and equal rival of the Chinese dragon- the two representing matter and spirit respectively. In fact, the Southern Chinese martial art Hung Ga is based on the movements of the Tiger and the Crane. In Imperial China, a tiger was the personification of war and often represented the highest army general (or present day defense secretary), while the emperor and empress were represented by a dragon and phoenix, respectively. The White Tiger (Chinese: 白虎) is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. It is sometimes called the White Tiger of the West (西方白虎), and it represents the west and the autumn season.
In Buddhism, it is also one of the Three Senseless Creatures, symbolising anger, with the monkey representing greed and the deer lovesickness.
The army generals were male, so this could be the reason y the WB class is bound to the male gender only. Also the tiger being the personification of war is another explanation (men r driven by temper, right?).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Tiger_%28Chinese_constellation%29
During the Han Dynasty, people believed the tiger to be the king of all beasts. According to legend the tiger's tail would turn into white when it reached the age of 500 years. In this way, the white tiger became a kind of mythological creature. It was said that the white tiger would only appear when the emperor ruled with absolute virtue, or if there was peace throughout the world. Because the color white of the Chinese five elements also represents the west, the white tiger thus became a mythological guardian of the west.
In the novel Shuo Tang Yanyi (Tales of Tang Dynasty), the reincarnation of White Tiger's Star is said to be Li Shimin's general Luo Cheng (羅成) ...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werecat
Mainland Asian werecats usually become tigers. In India, the weretiger is often a dangerous sorcerer, portrayed as a menace to livestock, who might at any time turn to man-eating. Chinese legends often describe weretigers as the victims of either a hereditary curse or a vindictive ghost. Ancient teachings held that every race except the Han Chinese were really animals in disguise, so that there was nothing extraordinary about some of these false humans reverting to their true natures. Alternately, the ghosts of people who had been killed by tigers could become a malevolent supernatural being known as "Chang", (伥) devoting all their energy to making sure that tigers killed more humans. Some of these ghosts were responsible for transforming ordinary humans into man-eating weretigers. Also, in Japanese folklore there are creatures called bakeneko that are similar to kitsune (fox spirits) and tanuki (raccoon dogs).[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

As pointed out, the gender-lock is probably due to elements of Chinese history and/or mythology.
But really, it's no big deal. I play both male and female characters (What's wrong with having a hot dude on my screen? b:chuckle) and it hasn't really affected anything. Very rarely have I been hit on by either gender, and I mostly find it amusing when it does happen.Director and Webmistress of Faction Tramonto0 -

Once I got so sick of it I made a veno so disturbing, so insane looking...to deter flirters. It hasn't worked. ;w; Something about the fluffy tail just attracts weirdos to me.
Anyway, I don't mind the genderlock, but I believe a female tiger running around with HUGE axes would be epic, as well as the occasional male fox hopping around taming pets would be interesting. I mean hey, if WINGED ELVES AND UNTAMED can breed together to create a FLYING TIGER (see winged tiger quest in game, seriously)....Why can't there be female barbs and male venos?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
