Making a genie

So basically I don't know anything about genies. Back when I originally played they didn't exist (PW-MY 2008-ish?), so yeah. I've been wearing this genie for 57 levels without a clue as to what it does. Someone told me that they use skills and what not. I would like to use it, but I have no clue how. If someone could tell me what to do with it that would be great.
