What happens if refining fails?

I just wanted to try out refining, but i heard there is a chance to fail, what happens if it fail? does my weapon/gear break, does it just go back to normal? plz answer respectfully, thx. b:victory

    It goes back to "normal" or 0.

    Mirage Fail = 0
    Tiek Fail = 0
    Tisha Fail = only lose 1 refine from what you were

    If refining fails from 0~+1 it'll remain unrefined, obviously. If it fails beyond that though, the equipment will lose all refines and return to unrefined. There are a number of stones you can use to increase refine rate, and lower failed refine penalties.
