What is the point of Alliances?

i don't see what alliances do, demonsage does it, but few others do. Why is that? and more importantly, what are the pros, cons, and perks of forming alliances? :/

    There are no real benefits. Just a PK protection option.

    As far as I can tell, War declarations and Alliances affect open world PVP only. In your PVP settings, you can set protections for Allied players.
