Poll: Emergency Maintenance for ALL servers

This server DC issue seems to be running rampant throughout ALL servers. Who is in favor for an emergency maint to resolve this grievance?

Personally, I would like to get this fixed well before TW times this weekend...b:angry

    Almost every pwe games server receive these attack.
    A ddos attack can make server unstable and may require days (even a month) before returning to normal.
    And who know is it actually already end or not . . b:shutup

    Think of it as you are a bank. You take people's money, and store it, and give it back to them. You have a few thousand customers.

    Then, some jerkwad comes in, and sends MILLIONS of robots at you, and they give you fake money to store. Suddenly, your regular customers cannot access their money, because you're inundated with robots, and the fake money jams everything up.

    Basically, someone, somewhere, has turned hundreds, thousands, or even millions of computers around the world into zombies, and is controlling them by remote. Each computer is intentionally flooding the PWE servers with garbage to disrupt service.

    DDoS: Distributed Denial of Service (attack).

    It stands for "Distributed Denial of Service attack". In other words, there are hundreds or thousands of computers all over the place attacking one machine.

    Usually these machines are "bots" or "drones" where the user installed something they ought not to, and are now under remote control. For most of the users, at worst they'll just think their internet connection is slow.

    Remember kids, surf safely with protection, keep your antivirus up to date, don't turn off your firewall, and for Pan Gu's sake... if you use Vista/7, don't turn off UAC!

    "Distributed Denial Of Service", to sumary up, that kind of attack consumes the broadband width making the server overload on "info" and fail on the logs.

    The thing is, they normally use that to test how powerful is a server...

    I wonder if PWI servers are powerful enough cause they seem they're going to challenge those "crackers" putting 2x in the weekend, servers are gonna be pretty overloaded by people farming instances + if they do that kind of attack again...

    I'm curious how will this turn out b:pleased PWE must be very sure of themselves and their servers, cause if they fail in the weekend this will be a paradise of QQ lol

    They can't directly fix it. The need their hosting facility's cooperation in identifying "fingerprints" of the attack so it can be blocked before it gets anywhere near the servers.

    That and they need to figure out who's behind it and get law enforcement involved. Believe it or not, it happens! b:shocked

    The problem most likely isn't the server, per se, but the sheer number of malicious data packets being sent. Many times the idea isn't to take down the server, but rather the network infrastructure outside the server so that the server admins can't do squat about it.

    Well, just imagine already a laggy server without maintenance this week, with all those players with a free weekend taking profit of their 2x, with all those "malicious packets" being sent... It might be a DCing fest if the servers get too unstable b:chuckle

    On the other hand, archosaur west can be finally a lag free place, no catshops if this happens, some might be very mad xD (my catshop failed tonight b:sad)

    For those experiencing disconnects, unfortunately it seems that we're still under attack. So until you hear from one of the admins (probably in the morning) about it finally going away you'll experience some more disconnects.

    The engineers are working to get this issue resolves ASAP. Thank you for your patience.

    Indeed. Before I logged off for the night, I went and checked the local kitty locations. ALL of the cube kitty shops were gone, along with West arch being considerably thinned out.

    Identification may be possible. It's unlikely though. A bot through a bot through a bot through a bot... All over the world, through encrypted connections?

    Even if they are identified, if they are in a 'hostile' nation... How ironic, the first one that pops up in my mind is China. Well, if they are in a country that isn't friendly to our government, in the US that is, there may be nothing to be done but ride out the attack until the attacker gets bored. I think that if it was in China in this instance, the authorities would crack down hard for once, since these are Chinese assets being hindered here...

    They most likely have a night shift, for such occasions.

    And sadly, Frankie may be getting called in to deal with this overnight... The IT guy at my last job once worked 4 days straight when a server went down... Everyone else got sent home. He was a mess after those 4 days. But... Company depends on him, so he does what needs to be done to keep things running. PWE depends on these servers to be up and running to make money, and by contract possibly, Frankie may be required to spend round the clock shifts working on them if they are under attack/go down due to failures.

    Might be someone other than Frankie, a team, or Frankie and a team, then they can switch off. Dunno.

    It happened when FW introduced their first pack. A buttdevestated FW player that thought FW would never be as bad as PWI got mad and did it.

    The only time I've seen an emergency maintenance in the last year or so is when they forgot to put an item in the cash shop.

    As it has been said already, "maintenance" will not help solve the current situation. With that in mind, the OP's poll isn't really needed.

    As to the rest of the thread, it is following the same line of conversation as the one Frankie started, so Fuzzy asks everyone to refer to the "main thread" if they wish to post their comments.
