Gear Enhancements instead of upgrades

There's a game called Adventure Quest Worlds, Very low budget game yes but it's got something i'd like to see here. There's literally millions of weapons and armor types but, you only need to have one or two of them. Why? because you can buy and make scrolls that enhance the basic stats and bonuses of whatever weapon or armor that you apply them to.

There's thousands of weapon models that are already implemented in PWI (many of which are very good, Eagle Claw duel swords come to mind) , yet we rarely see them due to the level ranges not being lived in shortly. What i suggest is having the weapon enhancement feature implemented in PWI, I'd like to be able to keep one set of weapons that I like the look of and can upgrade to match a better weapon, instead of having to deal with a hideous weapon only because of it having more/better stats

This would serve another purpose aside from aesthetic reasons as well. They would also add a layer of caution on PvP targets as well. Situation: You see a BM with what appears to be only level 40 axes, so you go to attack without inspecting his armor or level. He drops down a Heavens flame and then a Genies Bramble rage. You're either dead if low HP/Squishy or a big charm tick and time to turn tail. What happened? You ask yourself. He had enhanced the weapons he liked, and you didn't bother to look before you leaped.

Edit: another example I thought of for weapons that were great appearing were the level 19 earthguard sword and wand. And yes I'm aware i named another game but i am in no way advertising that PoS lol. 0 content at any stage x.x

Second Edit: Included a sword example. Left smexy blade - right fugly blade http://img811.imageshack.us/i/swordsf.png/

Would it be a forged thing or something you need to see a npc about? And what item/s would be used to enhance the weapon? Would you say breaking down one weapon and merging the item into another that is of the same type would be an idea of enhancing?

Even following that logic, low level enhanced weapon < high level enhanced weapon.

Kinda like upgrading tt60 axes to +12 and using them at 100, great idea right? Because they look cool...?

Or maybe each weapon can be unique in its own enhancements. For example, calamity axes. axes normally have a slow attack rate, by enhancing it each time, you increace the attack rate or the attack range. Doing this could also increase one or two of the bouneses of the weapon. Something like that?

No nothing like whats been stated. Like consider the level 1 starting barbarian Polehammer. Now imagine that hammer with stats equivalent IDENTICALLY to Nirvana. Basically suggesting instead of making a direct weapon, you make an enchantment to apply to whatever weapon you desire, erasing all current stats that are on it and replacing them with the scroll, charm, whatever object's statistics that you forged/bought from NPC. Ideally making weapons nothing more than an aesthetic choice, the power of each weapon would be in its applied enhancements.

Sounds more like Fashion for weapons. Another MMO I use to play offered this, and I like the concept. Then My Veno could run around with a big rake or a mop or something.

Actually the concept is based more off a level cap type of approach. It would provide the option of getting the new "level appropriate" weapon, or upgrading your old weapon to "level appropriate" stats.

Obviously they aren't going to make all weapons capable of exactly the same stats, but more along the lines of allowing you to upgrade your weapon as you go would be pretty cool.
