question:black pigment on alt vs in link squares

i made some black bikini pieces from random pigments. the link squares were very dark, but not exactly black. when i put the pieces on the alt, they were jet black.

people look at the link and think "scam". i guess i would too.

maybe i haven't seen everything, but i'm fairly sure only black and smokey pigments are even close to black.

Here is a pure guess on my part as a possibility:
Do random pigments generate some random values within set pigment color ranges, which then are assigned to the set colors? whereas maybe the link box squares are pure RGB 0->256 and if u rolled a RGB:25,25,0 it would really be mud black but get assigned to black on the actual item?

anyway, this looks really bad when trying to sell the pieces which sure look jet black actually on the toon.

i consulted with local RT fashionista on the issue and she agrees, the fashion is jet black, but boxes are funny. we looked at several items. some have jet black boxes and may have been dyed with actual black pigments: RGB:000..no rounding errors in link color boxes

doe sanyone have the real information on what is happening here? thx in advance :)

Not all fashion shows the true color of the dye. Ever seen a pure white Helmsley? Looks freaking pinkish purple. Try perfect pink on a Ceremonial set. You get a wonderful royal purple color.

So it's very possible that, while the pigment color you got wasn't exactly black, on the actual item, there is no discernible difference.

i know what u r saying: lollipop sleeves have a black cast to them..i dyed some orange and they came out deep reddish orange.

what i am saying is that the link box, with the 3 little squares of color isnt showing the exact pigment color on a random dye job.

there is no pigment called "almost black" , but yet the jet black bikini on the alt wearing it, shows a slightly brownish or purpleish tint to the black in the little link color boxes.

i even stood up against those whitish panels on the north arch AH area walls (behind seamstress right there by ah) to try and get the semi transparent windows to not mess the color up on like the grass or a brown tent etc. bikini is black on toon, links to bikini parts show off-black boxes :( color me baffled ..lol

Random Pigments generate random values, so you are able to get colors outside of the regular pigments.

This is essentially correct. There is a random set of colors you can get when you first get an item or when you use Random Pigments. The fixed-color pigments are a subset of the random set of colors, so not all random colors are available as pigments. With random colors you can't get any possible color, but there is a larger selection than the 32 fixed-color pigments.

This is how you can get an item that is not in a standard pigment color, like black.

If you use the fashion preview window you can keep clicking "Preview" to see the item in various possible random colors. You can also play with the color palette in the preview, but most colors on the palette are not actually available, so it only really helps for testing black and white.

There's at least 12 random dyes that are so close to pure black that it's virtually impossible to tell the difference. Smokey pigment is way far from black, it's more a purple hue.

ya no mistaking smokey. ijs that is only one even close...and right,,easily distinguishable from black

i agree regarding the link box colors, but i disagree regarding the actual item on the actual alt. From what i saw comparing colors with another person there,off-black is still mapped to pure black. you can look at the item on the toon AND thelink box at same time and it is very clear, the fashion on the toon is pure black while the link box is lighter. we tried with several off-black items and several black dyed items. only difference we saw was the link box square colors.

also, is there any hard description available of the ramdom pigment rules or conventions or whatever they may be called?

and thx everyone for posting :) I think we are getting close..but there is still a question.

the "virtually impossible to tell" part failed on the link boxes, but yes, passes on the alts. everything was jet black on the alts..with the exception of tinged items that just dont dye true.. so the remaining question is why can we all see the link box differences, but assuming all of theabove agruments: why can't we see those same differences on the actual alt? :)

My guess is that the difference between random colors hues is so slight from a true color that it wasn't practical to code them all in when the item is worn. The difference between black (0,0,0) and the next 3 hues (8,0,0 / 0,8,0 / 0,0,8) isn't noticeable to the naked eye.

It just made me always wonder why they even bothered to make randoms so variable instead of using the basic color template.
