Yay for more venos! b:pleased Regarding pets, you do know there is a lot of info to be found via stickies and forum searching, right? :P But anyways, quick rundown:
Tank pet: Glacial Walker (slightly edges out the Mag you mentioned)
Damage dealer: Starter scorpion or dark wanderer.
Flyer: Petite sawfly or cloud skatefish.
Water pet: Turtles tend to be good, but it's a mega pain to level them up, and not worth it. Tame whatever is available at your level when you need it, or use your flying pet by luring the mobs to the surface of the water. Get a celestial plumpfish at level 80.
Luring: Eldergoth Marksman seems to be the popular luring pet, since you can turn off all his skills and have him attack at range.
You'll start off with two pet slots, so you'll probably want to get a land pet and an air pet. For the land pet, you'd be fine with either the walker or the scorp/wanderer. For the air pet, fly and skatefish are about the same, they just look different.
Re expense, venos are *relatively* inexpensive, given that the pet takes most of the damage, and soul transfusion, metabolic boost, and the mana regen skill (I forget the name atm) save us a nice bit on pots.0 -

Ohh thx she read guides she just wanted to more for herself ;D0 -
Let's say welcome to the new veno. =D
I'll do my best to answer your questions.
1) + 3) Well, best pet wise, it depends if your girlfriend is willing to earn/spend a lot of money.
If yes, Herc and Nix are the best pets hands down. Nix is great for grinding/PK, hercs can tank almost anything (with a few exceptionss, bh69 pole and nob being the most obvious) and are great if you want to solo TT and your own low lvl bhs xD. Both the herc and nix start at lvl 1 so some grinding or lvling in cube is in order.
Sadly, you need 9999 Source of Force to get a herc and 9999 Phoenix feathers to get a nix, and they can cost anywhere from 7k to 10k+ each depending on gold price and whether there is a sale. Ouch...
If no, it's best to stick with the starter pets (scorpion or wolf) until she hits lvl 19. Then get a glacial walker, a magmite or a dark wanderer (lvl 10) (dark wanderers aren't outstanding tanks, but they DD well). Glacial walkers are better tanks than magmites, due to have more hp and magical defence, but magmites are still a viable option and there are still venos that use them. Most non-herc venos I've seen pretty much use a walker.
As for air pets, I would recommend the skatefish or the petite sawfly. Both are pretty good free pets that pack a decent punch and are easy to obtain. The petite sawfly starts at lvl 8 and are found around bamboo village I think. The skatefish are north of the tideborn city, and start at lvl 19.
Chrystalline magmites were the best pets until the tideborn expansion came out, but now the walkers are considered a bit better and as far as I know, are more commonly used among non-herc venos. Don't get me wrong here though - the magmite is still a viable option and are still used.
For water pets, get a plumpfish at lvl 80 and tame whatever is available. If you don't have the pet back slots for a water pet, just fish the water mobs out using an air pet and bombard them from above. It takes some coordination but is perfectly doable, so in reality, you don't really need a water pet at all unless the mobs are deep enough that your pet or skills can't reach them.
2) How expensive are venos? Other than pet skills (which cost 200k to lvl and perhaps more to learn) and the cost getting a herc/nix, venos are pretty much one of the cheapest classes in the game.
If you play them right, you'll have a low repair bill (you'll only really need to repair your weap), no mp and hp pots spent (via Soul Transfusion, Metabolic Boost and Nature's Grace) and pet food for pets, which for free pets is quite cheap. For herc/nix, getting a tome would be a good idea. Lvl 1 tomes cost 1-2mil but will keep your pet fed so that you only have to feed them when they die. Saves a lot of money in the long run. especially since meat, hay and perfect cookies don't come cheap.
Hope that helps. ^^Syredrae ~ lvl 100 Cleric (main character)

Just a minor nitpick, I seem to remember the skatefishes as starting at level 22?0 -
