The song's lyrics are almost all metaphor, so to understand it you have to have an imagination and some what of a brain.
The story behind it is very demented in its own way and yet very hopeful.

The way I translated it was that no matter what we do, no matter who we are, we will always need someone to share our world with, and be loved for who we are as a friend or more; perhaps even an enemy--because if we don't, we essentially stop functioning and fall apart. People as people need a reason to live, and we find that reason in each other or cease to exist, die, or go insane. Then we are no longer people.

Its where the song title comes from, "No man is an ISLAND"
"The Island" being the name of the song.

Pendulum is my favorite band, not only for this song but witchcraft, hold your color, watercolor, the other side, and more.
