How to skill a wolf?

So, I just reached level 49 and caught myself a Lunar Lupin, because it comes with howl 5, and to be honest, just looks really freakin awesome. ^^ Right now I'm just playing around with it and getting a feel for its strengths, but my question is this; if I decide to keep it, how should I skill it? I already have a shaudo to tank and a seamonster to DD... Would the wolf be superfluous, or is there a way to skill it to make it uniquely useful? Or would I be best just skilling it as a backup for one of the others?
I'd like to be able to find a niche for it, because I love how it looks and handles, but I don't want to waste coin if it won't end up being useful.

The wolf would probably perform better as multi-role back up to your other pets, but if you want it to fill a niche i would recommend it for luring. The reason for this is the pet is both fast enough (speed over 8.0 at lvl 90) and sufficiently ressilient it should have a remarkable performance on this role. The skill set would be Ream as main (allows you to better time lures in conditions of poor visibility), Threaten (allows you to decrease the damage a pulled mob will be hitting for the first few seconds), Slow (allows for safer luring when dealing with fast or increased speed mobs) and Tough (which should allow your pet to survive long enough to hit even going through thick groups). Yes, this means no room for Howl, specialization does come at a cost...
If you want it mostly for Howl then i would recommend one of two choices. First, you can use it as a utility/debuffing pet. This means keeping it's main attack (i think it should be Ream) and Howl, adding Threaten and Shriek. The other choice would be to replace Shriek for Bash, making it a back up attack pet, although the Seamonster's high mag def means you'd be keeping a weaker version of your main with speed as it's only advantage. For a pure back up i recommend a tanking skill set as Roar will allow it to gain aggro fast and the Threaten-Tough combo should allow you enough time to deal with whatever emergency brought your main pet down. Of course you can take any of this options and tailor it to your own needs, i hope this at least helps give you a better idea.0 -
i have a lvl 53 guardian wolf ( same family as lupin but lower lvl = a bit better stats but lower lvl in skills) anyway , i use it as my luring pet as well , his speed is really good and his defences help a lot .
Flesh ream lvl 3 is decent for luring as MANray said , the icon of *bleed* helps ( i have managed to lure things without my pet being damaged at all at times)
he has Howl lvl 2 which is nice when i lvl him outside of cube , maybe ill keep that.
Boost lvl 1 is useless imo , so im gonna replace it with slow , which will give me a bit of time to react
Fourth skill is tough lvl 1 ( i have teached that to him ) tough helps a lot , gonna get it to 4
till now im really satisfied with him
hope i helped b:victory[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Better idea.....lvl up a lvl 2 wolf......in the long run it will be better0 -

The problem is, it's still a wolf and a frogling would be better but about as useless at higher levels. The Lunar Lupin is a good choice because it comes with L.5 Howl which makes it a good cheap disposable grind pet.Be kind: Help the GMs to depopulate the servers.0 -
Manray and Phoenix, excellent advice, thanks. I'm still unsure of the direction I want to take the wolf... I don't want to remove howl 5, at least not until I can get it on my DD pet. Perhaps I'll content myself with just leveling up ream when I can, for now.
furry17: I realize the stats might be a bit better, but I don't want to spend the time leveling one from level 2, and the Lupin comes with Howl 5. Plus, if I was only concerned with best stats, I probably wouldn't be using a wolf in the first place. :P0 -
How big a difference in stats are we talking about?
The difference between 60% damage reduction and 70% damage reduction is noticeable. But would you notice a difference between 60% and 62% in terms of how often you have to use heal pet?
I'm not sure. I'm not there yet.
It might be worth having the lower attributes if it means having access to a howl 5 when the best you can purchase (at that level) is howl 4. It also might be worth it to save the coin on purchasing the initial skills (adding howl to the level 2 wolf vs getting a higher level wolf that comes with howl).0 -
To me the decission comes down to what role you mean to use your pet for. Wolves do in general terms posses well balanced stats, which makes them better suited for pets which will take on several roles. Type 4 or metallic Wolves however seem to share the characteristics of a magic tank (decent phys def and hp, high mag def) with high speed. They would make the best choice if you were looking to fill in the roles of both mag tank and puller, which could make them a great complement to a Glacial Walker, a slow pet whose mag defense is only decent, or other similar statted options. The dps output of type 4 wolves is relatively low however (barely higher than a Shaodu Cub's for the Guardian) which makes them little suited for the attack role. This is why i recommended the multi-role/back up configuration for the OP.
The difference in stats when compared with type 1 lvl 2 Wolf is considerable when it comes to damage, and the starter wolf also gets better phys def and hp, which makes it a better pet for multi-role however. Investing in skilling a lvl 2 wolf is certainly worth it if you want a Wolf as one of your final pets. They'll make for decent and relatively small attack or back up pets. The Mad Wolfling would make the better choice imo since it's distinctive coloring sets it apart from the Sharptooth most venos will be familiar with.0 -

Some excellent considerations re: cost of skills vs time leveling a lower wolf up, I'd not thought about that. Perhaps I'll just grind with the wolf for now, and leave skilling until I've sorted all this out. ^^
EDIT: I recall reading in a previous thread that the type 4 (lupin, guardian, etc.), while not as good in some specifics as the lower wolves, make good all around pets. Would it really be that much more beneficial to level a lower wolf, as opposed to keeping the lupin?0
