Ranged luring

Hi,
As of today i have tamed 2 Eldergoth, the sharpshooter and the marksman.
In recent posts in other threads it suggested that these pet's have a ranged attack.
I have tried this with the default skills and regular attack but in both cases it runs up to the mob.
Am i doing something wrong? if yes, is it possible to do ranged luring with the "slow" skill?
3rd question, is there any other pet that can do ranged luring? (the eldergoth is just butt ugly) i have heard about cactapods (not sure if the name is correct)
thanks in advance

There are some 8isch Cactopads with more range then a Marksman in Eden something but i never was there i only readed bout that.
You need to disable Bash and only use Auto attack or it will run in melee range. The Ranged Attack has very little range but this should work.0 -
Cactopods are basically your only other choice. And to lure you need to manually turn off your pet's skills (just right click on whichever is active) or your pet will move to melee range. Yes this means you can't use Slow when luring in range...0

the trick to ranged luring is to TURN OFF THE SKILLS. yes. counterintuitive, but true.
the pets are like little mini-venos in one way, they have skills (like venos' magic attacks) and regular, physical attacks (like just double-clicking on a mob and whaling at it with the stick). unlike venos, they'll use the regular attack automatically whenever they're not using a skill; they'll use their "default" (bold-outlined) skill automatically whenever it's not in cooldown.
ranged pets are special only because their regular attack has a, well, range on it. their skills typically don't, not enough to matter. (i'm trying not to split hairs here, skills do have a slight range on them, but that's another story. for practical purposes, most pet skills are "melee range".)
so if you keep a pet's skills --- any of them, really --- selected as the default skill, then the pet will walk up close enough to use that skill by default --- before the fight even starts. that's melee range, which isn't what you want. right-click the default skill to unselect it, THEN send the pet to attack. unlike ranged mobs, your ranged pet will NOT back off out of melee range before using its ranged attack --- which is stupid, but typical for PWI. so you have to make it not do anything that would make it walk up close to begin with.
also beware: the default attack typically doesn't build aggro very well. i normally let my lv51 eldergoth land three or four ranged hits on any similar-level mob before i open up with my own skills, otherwise i DO steal aggro, and that's a trick i usually only pull later in the fight. (playing aggro ping-pong with your pet is another useful trick, but it's a game best left for nearer the end of the fight.)
the cactopods are supposedly level 80+ pets. they're said to be good, with even more range than the eldergoths, but i don't have a character that high level myself yet.
edit: doh, ninjaed twice over. :-/[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] Heaven's Tear alts: KenLubin, Sou_Hon, JudyCaraco --- level 5x chars.0 -
The cactopods from Eden have a longer range and are faster than the eldergoths, but are squishier... making them better ranged lurers, but worse ranged tanks.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

if you had spare cash and were only planning on using the pet for it's ranged luring - you COULD technically go to the zoologist and forget its skills.. but that is really limiting your options for the sake of a half a second to right click an icon[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

well that was the plan, forget all skills and learn "slow" but i guess that doesn't work b:chuckle
i'll use the kowlin now for debuff luring, and i'll get a cactapod at lvl 89[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
