Google Translator, and why you should use it

Perfect World INTERNATIONAL indeed. For the longest I've been struggling in BH's and what have you, with non English players. Now I'm not gonna rant on how we should have English servers or anything like that, this isn't a complaint thread. It's an informative one. I don't know about you guys, and maybe I'm just a little late on this, but ever since stumbling upon google translator, squadding with "foreigners" has never been easier.

I found myself in an aweful situation during one of my FC runs. We got our squad together like usual, everything seemed fine until out barb thought he'd tank in his anthro human form. Now this would be fine, had he been successful, but he wasn't. I, as long as a couple of others, pleaded that he switch to tiger form to end the aggro ping pong. Finally I said the only "foreign" phrase I could think of: "Habla espanol?" I knew this wouldn't help because I don't speak spanish myself...but I was looking for a response. He replied "Im german, but not good english" So I'm all like *GRRR RAGE! SEARCH FOR TRANSLATOR*

http://translate.google.com/#en|de|we%20need%20you%20in%20tiger%20form

That's all I had to do, copy and paste and the rest of my FC was fine. Of course, it's hard to understand what they're saying back because you'd have to type it in the translator which is time consuming (especially in an FC) but it helped me get my point accross and he indeed went into tiger form.

So yes, I'd recommend Google Translator for your squadding needs. It has all kinds of translating and you can make your squad mates go "omg i didn't know he was bilingual like that". Hope this is helpful to someone.

Or you could just not squad with the BRs and Russians and tell them to go back to the version designed for them.

Thought about it...but it's so hard finding a cleric/barb. If one of them is "foreign", I'd best take it...unless they truely fail.

Also, I've started my runs by saying "Does everyone here speak English!?"

    So far so good.

ok, i am german and i find this kinda insulting. i do know that this version of pwi is international and for surviving the game, you need english. but why do you expect none-english-speaking-people to speak perfectly english just for making your life a lil easier??? instead of coming up with this translator- be a little more patient with people who dont have english as their motherlanguage? how about that?

Don't get insulted. I'm german too, do you see me raging about how this person was telling us how to make squading easier? English is becoming the universal langauge these days and MOST people know even a little bit. I'm sure over 80% of PWI population speaks English, as a first or second language. I have known people who speak perfect English as a second language... one guy learned from watching an English TV show.
Anyway, I see no where in this guy's post that he was insulting Germans or any other non-English person, and he didn't demand that EVERYONE he squads with to speak PERFECT english. Plus, I highly doubt anyone would actually want to have a non-english speaking barb tanking their FC without a way of understanding how to talk to him. He wasn't insulting people, geez. Please take your ignorance elsewhere.

Point being, it /is/ very hard to deal with a language barrier in squads, it can be the difference between finishing the instance and having on of those /facepalm moments, and this guy was just sharing his story about it and telling us how to cope with it when our time comes. And it will. Thank you for this, I will favourite & use it lots. :D

I stoped playing with all non american players that can't speak proper english. The last 27 encounters ended up with them wanting to date me and trade pictures. So now I give none of them a chance and instant blacklist them when I find them.

One could think that tabbing out during a FF boss to translate stuff for your teammates might not be the smartest idea if you're not a DD.

As for "Patience helps"; what are we gonna wait for? The barb or whatever to get a xxxxxx to English dictionary from the closest bookstore? It's easier to just Alt+Tab, pull up internet and bring up a translator. It may not translate to perfect (Insert language here) but it's better than sitting there with our thumbs in our arses waiting for "patience" to work.

I understand where u are coming from. How can it be unfair if he is the one using the translator? hes not saying that u have to use it its just a suggestion to make our gameplay alot smoother. No one is forcing u to use it. its ur choice wether u use it. I think its a great suggestion. maybe put an ingame translator so we dont have to switch out screens? could help alot

ive had this situation before too, except our barb was speaking hmoob. google translator, and a slight knowledge of having spent a huge amount of time in minnesota (huge hmong population,) made the situation SOOOO much easier. my tip: play windowed mode, so you can get through to it easier.

you cant, though its extremely aggrivating when you get those kind of party members who just are stubborn beyond belief, finding it insulting if someone thinks they should know some sort of communicable english. i've been kicked from a majority romanian squad for asking them to not try to talk to me in their mother tongue, it made them cuss me out as if i was some ignorant american.

'u dont hav 2 belav in romanian, u beeeep, get owt party nao.'

    OH NO!!

No no no I'm so sorry.

I got this translator as a way for ENGLISH speaking players to communicate with "foreign" players, not the other way around. I'm so sorry if anyone misunderstood what I was implying. I don't expect anyone to know perfect English. Again, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, I didn't mean to insult anyone.

Although the translator of course can't get you the 100% correct meaning [and for certain languages it really sucks...like actually most eastern languages], I think it's still a good suggestion. Because even if it gives you something vague, chances are you will recognize one or two nouns at the very least and be able to guess the intent. Same with writing messages back-they will probably be able to decipher through it even if it's not perfect.

Of course this is only if you have no idea what they're saying. Nearly everyone I've squadded with can speak enough English to get by. No one was criticising those who don't speak english as a first language, I just see this as a handy way to figure out something if you're totally clueless.

A few times I've voluntarily joined Spanish speaking only squads to practise my spanish....I found it lots of fun b:surrender

Yeah I believe most languages arrange their words differently than it would in English, but I think the main idea is that you can get your point accross.

I wouldn't recommend it for full convos or anything like that. Just certain situations where a teammate can't quite follow your native tongue, you can politely ask their main language (assuming they understand THAT much) and then proceed to direct using translator. I recommend asking "Do you understand?" in their language as well.
