You have to have the equipment in your inventory, you can't have it still equipped before you drag it in.

I was also unsure about whether if i use a lvl1 D.orb to refine my equip does that then mean it can only b refined once? i'v done heaps of resarch on the help sites but it doesn't really explain that

I wouldn't personally use orbs before +5 or +7. Using a level 1 orb on a +0 item means that it will always get to +1. But the chance to get it to +1 without orbs is so high that you usually waste money doing it that way. And if you use it to get to +1, you need more if you want to +2 it. You can combine them at Jewelcraftsman, but like I said, you shouldn't use orbs until you are trying to at least +5 your equipment.

Specifically - a one-stat dragon orb will mean you do not fail if you're going from 0 to 1

A 2-star means you never fail going from 0 to1, or going from 1 to 2.

A 3 star means the same, but allows 2 to 3 as well.

    And so on.

And yes, you need that exact dragon orb, which you can make by combining. You can't just have the uncombined orbs.
