It's safest to assume that every player is a guy. But since that might offend some people, I refer to everyone by the gender of their characters. Of course, inside I withhold judgment.

It really doesn't matter what gender a player really is unless you try to flirt/hit on them. And doing that in a video game is just silly, IMHO.

    EDIT:

99% of male characters are guys.
50% of people who claim to be girls are guys.
90% of people who wear a bikini are guys.
99% of ugly female characters are girls.

Golden rule of online games: Every SHE is a HE until otherwise stated with given proof such as:

    (a) Picture
    (b) Ventrilo/Teamspeak

Sadly even those can be faked with a fake picture or a voice changer program. So it's better off to just assume everyone is a guy in games.
I call it how I see it.

I do this...if they minded being misjudged as a girl, they wouldn't have created a girl character. They have no right to get offended if I call their girl character a "she". b:chuckle

not all girls do that. some just let you assume they are a guy because they find you ignorant and are annoyed they have to explain their gender everytime they meet some new person.

Well if they dont object I dont bother much. If they do object, I apologize and address them accordingly.

Doesnt force me to keep wondering whether its a girl or a guy when am probably gonna squad them for about an hour and never even see them again (90% of the time this is what happens).

I wanted to write a topic like this someday, but you did now, so I will respond, no matter how trivial the subject may be.

How to guess? It's not that easy. There are good actors, as there are bad ones, and this for both genders. It's only when you know the person better (mainly by inconsistencies of behavior) or that he/she tells you the truth that you will know.
And you will have to differentiate between the genuine and the fake people too.

As long as you are not cheated upon, I guess it's fine and a minor detail. For me friendship should not be depending on age, gender, occupation or location. That said, I am very very careful around strangers.

Anyway, weird people are really common (Dare I say even more on the interwebs and MMOs?), so better inquire very well when you want to flirt or just befriend someone. Expect too much and be singed. b:laugh

Yup, I do not believe in romance in MMOs anymore, so I am fine.

i find it seldom matters, in practice.

if someone gets my gender wrong more than once or twice i'll usually just PM them a polite correction, mostly in case they would end up feeling weirdly about it. but it's not worth my getting upset about; the pronouns used by the other half of humanity don't become insults just because they're applied to me.

and +1 to what Lesthar and Armsman said about flirting in-game --- unless you're dealing with somebody you know unusually well, it's a pretty silly thing to do. not to say you can't make even romantic connections in-game, but it's a video game not a singles bar. get to know people first before you try to pick them up.

(ObHint: veno character? could be a man or a woman running it. veno character with the biggest **** the game will allow you to create? much more likely to be owned by a man... and a young one, at that.)

It's a dangerous practice, even. Getting attracted or attached too much on an avatar or a manner of communication can lead to despair or hatred if not dealt with appropriately.

'I am not what you believe, I am a guy' (when one guy falls in love with a female character, whose master is a dude)

'I am already taken in reality, I am so sorry' (be it a lie or not)

'Aren't you a creep?' *blacklist* (ouch, haha)

    Etc. etc.

Who never experienced that or had to deal with that gets the first stone.

For most who have met me in-game will tell the same story where they all thought I was a girl by the way I talk I guess. To me, I feel that it was the amount of talking I did since I could carry on many hours of faction chat without really skipping a beat between members coming and going.

The best part was once they found I was a guy the many minutes of silence that took place then the first thing typed would be similar to this. "Seriously, a guy!?!?".

I am still not sure if that is a good thing for me or not. b:surrender

Really, why would anyone need to know that? If you're treating females and males differently, you're an idiot. If you're planning to bust guys pretending to be girls to get free stuff, then you're an idiot. If you're planning to pretend to be a girl to get free stuff, you're an idiot.

i know a high level barb with a low level veno alt that pretends to be a girl for free stuff.. hes in the hugest faction on our server. (i didnt name names) but i was friends with him since we were low levels together, so he told me a long long time ago. He even does world chat from his veno. lol

but your right.. whats to care? unless your looking for a date on perfect world.. but then your idiot like olba said.

as for telling if its a girl. its almost impossible. i know guys that act more girly than most girls in game.

This is not completely fool proof and is mostly meant as tongue in cheek, but here are some clues:

    "real girl" playing female character:

-- Has more than one or two fashion items
-- Fashion items have been dyed (even if it costs 19 dyes for each piece) and pieces match.
-- Wears long flowing dresses a lot.
-- More apt to put short hair on the character.
-- More likely to make a straight-line, thin character than a filled-out curvaceous one
    -- Fashions are on auto-rotate
-- Will ask to be embraced for "chi"
-- If cleric, won't heal other female characters dressed better than she (ok, this one stretches too far for a joke).
    -- Calls everyone "hun"
-- More concerned with equitable, fair, fun groups than power squads with an everyone for themselves attitude.
-- Won't initiate or accept many duels

    G.I.R.L. playing female character:

-- If character wears any fashion, they are the random colors coming straight from the vendor/boutique (no investment in dyes). Even if it is an orange top with purple skirt.
-- Character is usually in a bikini
-- Character has derogatory name such as ImaWhore, FoxySluut, DoUWannaDoMe, etc...
-- Character bust is as large as can be made and waist is as small as it can be made
-- Tries to dictate detailed squad strategy 30 minutes before reaching the boss.
-- Will not ask to be embraced for chi and turns down other's offers to make chi
-- Tells other players how to play their characters whether they ask for advice or not.
    -- Frequently wants to duel

Feel free to append this list
Since when did the word "fail" change from a verb to an adjective? A character can "fail" (as a verb) or be a "failed" character (as an adjective), but there is no such thing as a "fail" character.

If "Barb" (not "arian") is short for Barbarian and "Veno" (not "mancer") is short for Venomancer then shouldn't we be calling Assassins something other than "sins"?

I hope they weren't treating you differently(being distance, etc) as a result. Lot of guys think MMOs are a giant dating service and only befriend girls to try and get with them in some way..

As for the topic: USUALLY the scandelish looking girls char are guys behind the monitor. You can't tell with mine though because my character reflects my tastes which is a bit more classy and less skin showing.

But ultimately the best way to find out is to simply ask.
