"Server update connection failed and getting stuck at cmd.txt"

Yes, I know there are other threads with this same issue. The majority of them I've seen were for XP - I am running Vista Home Premium - and none of them provided any useful answer for my situation.

I had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall Windows yesterday. I've finally gotten PWI downloaded again and reinstalled. I'm at game version 296. The patcher refuses to run, I get the little window to "try again" or "stop update" over and over again. It seems to be stuck at the cmd.txt file. When I attempt to run the manual patch, which I've downloaded and redownloaded 4 times, I get the "server update connection failed" or whatever. I've reinstalled PWI 4 times, ran as administrator, verified, yadda, yadda. Still nothing, update won't run. I've installed the appropriate language packs (pretty sure, anyway). I saw mention in another thread about IE 8, which I've downloaded and installed. I've downloaded the manual patches, trying both the 296-334 and the 296-332 patches, to no avail - "update server connection failed" without fail. I've tried both Patch 1 and Patch 2 servers with the same results. I obviously am able to connect to the internet in every other manner, I have NO firewall whatsoever, so I know it's not that. At the first attempt to install and run, I had no anti-virus programs running. I am now running Threatfire and PC Tools Spyware Doctor. I did not have any issues like this in the past and I've run PWI on this particular computer for over a year before having to reinstall Windows. PC Tools Spyware Doctor is the only new program I am running this time around.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance you can give me - please let me know exactly what other information you would need from me to help you help me better :)

Thank you,
WillowGirl

EDIT: When I initially start up PWI, I get the patcher window and a smaller window with no type, two buttons, and the bottom button says "Later". Also, when I click the top button (I assume it to be something like "Now", the opposite of later, lol) the small update options window opens, I click confirm, and the patcher screen disappears and a small update-y type window with 2 status-type bars, says PWI Rising Tide, connecting to server, downloading files, etc., and then the patcher screen resumes and once again pops up the small update settings window, which I click confirm on, and... everything happens all over again - I see "console cmd.txt" and nothing else ever happens besides the "try again" ****.

Anybody home? I see admin replies to threads made after mine... Is there some other information I can supply that would be more helpful? I continued to uninstall and reinstall time after time and am currently re-downloading PWI for the THIRD time in the hopes that it's the download itself that's screwed up somehow. Every time I've installed, I've verified, so I don't really think it's that - I'm just feeling kind of desperate at this point. Putting hundreds of dollars into something that won't function properly will do that to a person, I suppose, so a little consideration would be greatly appreciated at this point. Of course, I could submit a ticket, however, in the past, I've rarely received response to that method, so I hoped coming to the forums first could solve my problem.

This is me right now: b:angryb:cryb:angryb:cry

Can I at least get acknowledgement from an admin that someone gives a **** and is looking into this problem? Please???

I did submit a ticket a couple of hours after my first post. No reply to that.

I don't know what a "trace route" is.

And yes, I've been playing PWI on this laptop since I bought it about a year and 3 months ago.

All I really need to know is what could be causing the update server connection problem - I had no issues downloading the game, my connection is excellent, blahblahblah. I've downloaded every patch available from 166 on - my husband had the version 166 download on his computer from when he installed and I even tried that with the hopes of getting the earlier patcher to run properly. Of course, it gives me the same message no matter how I work it, either "update server connection failed" or it gets stuck at cmd.txt.

As if it wasn't fun enough (/sarcasm) having a laptop decide that it just didn't like me anymore (I suddenly started getting a "BOOTMGR is missing" message upon startup - or lack of startup because that message is followed by "press ctrl-alt-del to restart), but to spend 9 hours attempting to repair it with the (lack of) help from HP and Microsoft, and finally having to reinstall Windows, I then had to spend over 3 hours downloading and installing PWI all over again. And now I've spent probably a total of 16 hours attempting to get PWI to just run the stupid updates, so you'll have to excuse me if I sound incredibly b:angryb:angryb:angry - it's because right now I'm ready to say "Kiss my rear-end, PWI, and give me back the hundreds of dollars I've wasted on your game!"

I would settle, however, for a reply of some kind from an admin whose opinion might actually be useful. Or a reply to the ticket. Or a reply to any of the numerous other threads that state the same problem and never received a reply.

Now, is there anyone out there with some information that might actually help me?

Well forget this thread, I solved the problem on my own by following the instructions of a user on the Ether Saga forums who had the same issue with ESO as I was having with PWI - for anyone who has this problem, go to this link:

    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...s/codepage.exe
    BINGO!!!

    1. download
    2. unzip
    3. unzip CHINAS.zip
    4. run .bat file (CHINAS.bat)

    DONE! patch will work again

Thanks for all the non-help, PWI :P
