I can tell you right now the person who wrote that article most likely is a mmorpg gamer and most likely lost most of his money and most of his life to a online game, I can quit this game and never look back and not regret it. I personal think that yes there are a lot of people on here that are addicted but I also believe there are people who play this game to interact with people from other countries and so on.
I looked at this article in a funny way!

There's been a few other game developers who have come out with the same message. It is pretty obvious.
But I think it's notable that PWI is not sticking to the formula. All of our dailies seem to be a constant reward per lever push. End game gear that would otherwise take months of farming to obtain is easily bought with real money and very little time investment in the game itself. It may increase revenue for the game but isn't as addictive as it could be. I think we should be thankful ^^[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

2. Wait just long enough for everyone to become frustrated with it and realize just how long it's going to take to obtain their goal.
3. Introduce a method of efficiently purchasing the desired item with real currency while eliminating or sufficiently curtailing the need to work in-game for it.
I don't think I need to keep going. PWI doesn't just stick to the formula, it exploits it on a whole different level.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

That isn't a formula to keep you addicted, it's just a shrewd way of making already addicted players spend money. Free mmo's have to operate on 2 different levels of rules, striking a balance between addictiveness/fun and profitability (a.k.a. game mechanics that drive revenue but aren't fun/addictive, ie. charms). It might seem at times that they're working contrary to their goal but that just means they're concentrating on their other objective.
Also, humans are social animals. Having the "lever" give a constant non-interval reward isn't addictive by itself, but it IS if you know that your enemies/friends are also able to receive this "free reward", and that if you don't push the lever in 24 hours you miss that day's reward forever. So they put in dailies which give large amounts of exp for little effort. If you don't push the lever, you fall behind, because everyone else is pushing the lever. You can't get that effect in an experiment with mice >.>
But seriously, enuff with the dam metaphors.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

b:chuckle ..shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

@ Burnout: I think the argument in the article isn't referring to how game developers want to make the game more fun (to make players addicted)-- that would be an ok thing. It's how they manipulate certain aspects of the human psyche to make players addicted even if they're not having any fun at all.
I don't know about anyone else, but I used to do PWI dailies religiously. Then at some point that was all I was doing. Then I just stopped doing them altogether because they're friggin boring. Now I hang around town all day playing with fashion. I still log on though so I guess I'm still a little addicted b:chuckle[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
