Soulgems in Weapons

So i had this discussion with my bro the other day and we couldn't work out how this works...

Playing as a physical damage dealing character naturally i would stone my weapons with physical damage gems, but the element stones(wood, fire, earth, metal, water) add more damage per stone.
Now do the elemental damage actually add to physical attacks or not?
Barb's poison fang adds wood damage and it increases phys damage as does the archers blazing arrow with fire damage.

Another dilemma is do the elemental stones need to do enough damage to overpower the enemies mag def??
or does it just coincide with phys...

Thanx for any responses!
=D

TBH I was actually wondering this too. I heard a rumor it only works for normal attacks, not skills. So for a weapon such as a fist which pretty much only uses normal attack, which would add more damage?

A Garnet stone adds weapon damage. So any of your cool skills which help weapon damage (especially masteries), factor the gems into its calculations, where as a elemental stone adds damage on top of the calculations.

So, my Bow masterty adds +60% weapon damage to my attack. So a Flawless Garnet in my bow can be seen as adding +25*1.6 = +40 to each of my normal attacks. (Yes I didn't factor in blazing arrow)

To figure out how much damage garnet contributes to your total damage you have to factor in your mastery and the dex/str contribution as well

    For melee: (1 + STR / 150 + Mastery) * weapon attack
    For ranged: (1 + DEX / 150 + Mastery) * weapon attack

Plug in your garnet into weapon attack and multiply times the other side to see how much it really adds.
Mastery, poison fang, frost blade, blazing arrow, barb attack buff, sparks: all add a percentage of weapon attack.
The elemental added damage doesn't get multiplied by anything

elemental stones are great for when you're a melee class attacking a heavy armor enemy. mainly, elemental stones are only really useful for PvP/PK/TW/etc

overall, garnets will give you more "bang for you buck" in the grand scheme of things... but if you socket 2 level 12 element gems (especially if they two different types, like wood+water for a BM), you'll deal much much more damage to heavy armor enemies than if you used garnets (i've personally tested this)
