how can i upgrade my manufacturing skill?

    Make things at the relevant NPC. The Blacksmiths allow you to make weapons, the Craftsmen allow you to make jewelry, the Tailor allows you to make clothes and the Apothecary allows you to make pots. Just go to the "manufacture" option at each of the NPCs and see what you can make. Making items requires specific mats however. You can farm these after you have bought a pickaxe from the Merchant, or kill monsters to get item drops.
