Really noobish question

Okay, so I'm about to meet the requirements for better armor, but the thing is, my old armors has 3 shards in it that I don't just want to waste. Is there any way I can get the old shards out of my old armor so that I can fuse them and put them in my new armor? Sorry to waste your time...
