    you might do better,
but then again you might not do better at all and be worse than a non cash shopper. Money can't buy skill. Period.

and to answer your question - no. cash shopping is not necessary for PvE.

Also, you don't need a charm until wayyy later, and even then it's mostly personal preference, as event pots can get you by in terms of replenishing.

Can't say much for the new server, but the main things for PvE you'd want from the cash shop are flying mounts, and a hammer for your lvl 50 and lvl 80 boxes. Tanks are prefferred with charms for various things, and veno's are always after the phoenix or herc pets, but you'll be fine w/o cash shop items so long as you learn to play your class. No one actually needs to use the cash shop to play/enjoy the game, it just opens up different options. You'll find out quick enough what you feel is worth paying for, and what you can do without b:pleased

but what about that hp replenish thing - I know its important but I'm quite casual and at best will make it to level 40 or so.
I would like a flying + ground mount
otherwise next to my mounts is there anything I should buy? or can I just play free?

I played to lvl 77 with a squishest class (wizard) without HP charm and never had problems with finding parties or doing quests. I even tanked some magic bosses and it was fine.

I bought few HP charms with in-game coins lately, will try to get used to it :p

Event food (Multiflavor Jiaozi) is cheaper than HP charm and works better - you control when you use it.

    Only for one.

But you can always revert pet to egg, send it via Postbox to the other character, hatch it and use it.

Aerogear is easier - just send it via Postbox. The problem is that aerogears have race restrictions (Elves use only wings, Humans - flying swords, etc).

Ps. Sending coins via Postbox is instant but items arrive with 1 hour delay so don't get scared :P
