this may be a dumb question but something i still am confused about. so there is elemental resistances on gear, we get that.. but how do you know what type of damage a monster deals? there is no way to get the information that i see in the chat windows or by watching a fight.

so please tell me i am an idiot and that there is an easy way to know so i don't think that half of the shards are worthless 1's and 0's in a code and just waste our time with more junk to sell to the vendor and stats to read through.

Can't say I'm sure either ... but if you look at the mob, it generally has an element listed (if none, than I guess it always does physical ...). Then basically, just look at the attack. If it 'looks' like a physical attack (clawing at you, shooting a bow, etc) then it's physical damage - otherwise it's magical, and of the same element as the mob.

    At least that's what I assume ...

When you target the animal, point the cusor on the bottom line of their stats the left hand corner display their elemental type if the pointer is on the type another drop down list will display its weakness. Example fire is weak against water etc..b:pleased

the elemental from mobs is not 100% true

some time, for example, u will see wood elemental doing water dmg
but in most case u will see wood doing wood

*if u want magical resist u better increase all 5 elemental
    genesis (r.i.p.) ===> conqueror (r.i.p.) ===> zen (r.i.p.) ===> iam (r.i.p.) ===> guardianz (r.i.p.) ===> spectral ===> essence
starting to be a nice guild hoppers b:surrender

go on my website it contains lots useful informations about PWI

    thanks for the responses

i know the general rule table that pops up when you mouse over the mob's window but it really doesn't tell much except for a generic table of elements, doesn't list that the mob does magic, physical or elemental damages. the whole system is rather transparent with no real info to work with.

also not sure why this got moved to the beginner's guide area, i figure this is alot more widespread than most people acknowledge but most just like to forget about it and mash buttons or blame their healer for sucking. i'd just like to see what type of damage is really coming in, i tend to not trust a flag on a mob that sais "fire" because i know how devs work, they like to throw in curves that you can't see just to annoy you or out of laziness don't check their own work or simply have a different mindset than some(i don't claim to be psychic).

we're not in a guild so sometimes it is nice to know what to expect from a mob, trying to kill group mobs with just me, my wife and a guardian charm isn't easy most of the time so the little things make a difference.

for example: earthboss (gluttonix) in fb59 does firedamage,... even though he has earth element

I can only tell that a melee attack is always physical, as far as I've seen atleast.

You can usually guess the element by the animation of the attack:

they throw a ball of ice = water
they throw a rock = earth (NOT physical)
they spray a green mist = wood
    they shoot lightning = metal
they throw a fireball = fire

Theres also this AoE some bosses have which shoot some sort of energy wave at you (chin, Sereneti and myriadtail use it for example) these are physical.
Or they shoot purple skulls at you (like at the end of Secret Passage) these are also physical I think.. but I'm not sure.

they throw a rock = earth (NOT physical)

This depends. If they throw it, like for instance fushma in FB51, it's range physical (archer). If you see a casting circle under them before they fire the rock (like the rinodrakes), it's earth magic.

Also, the towers around FB69 do ranged physical dmg , while it may look like wood dmg. (also, like archers they're dmg is halved if you come close to them, which is nice since they can't move back)
