Wards why mele

hey people im new to this game and i has having a look at some of the weapons for the mage and i found out that wards are mele which to me is a bit weird because in the other rpg or mmorpg games i have played they were ranged weapons and im a bit lost on this,

ps i dont know if this is the place i should post this sorryz

    simple....we don't use our regular attack....like in every other game lol.....

    our skills/spells do way more then basic attacks....in every single mmorpg/rpg game to date.
    and the choice of skills/spells is enough to continually cast without waiting for cooldowns.
    (of course you might run out of mana but...you can use mana potions....and if you don't have any on you......you'll be screwed then.
