A lot of people don't know if it's cheaper to buy feathers/SoF from cat shops/auction house, or if they should convert gold and buy the packs themselves.
If you calculate the probabilities, the battle pet packs average 26.8 each according to pwdatabase. My experience matches the pwdatabase figures (26.9 and 26.7 for my herc and phoenix).
There's a 2% transaction fee for buying gold. And 1 gold will get you two packs. So the average cost per feather/SoF works out to:
(gold_price * 1.02) / (2*26.8)
So for the following gold prices, the corresponding price per individual feather/SoF is:

Example: Say you can buy gold for 438k (list price at the auctioneer). Look at 438k on the above chart and you see the corresponding SoF/feather prices are 8,335 and 6,668 and 5,001.
If there is no sale, that means buying the battle pet packs with gold means on average you're paying 8,335 coin per SoF/feather. If you see it priced for less on a cat shop, you're better buying it from that shop. If you see it priced for more, on average you will be better off buying the gold and getting the battle pet packs yourself. I say on average because you could get lucky or unlucky while opening the packs.
If pet packs are on sale for 40 silver each (instead of the normal 50 silver), then the magic number is 6,668 coin per SoF/feather.
If pet packs are on sale for 30 silver each, then the magic number is 5,001 coin per SoF/feather.
Usually the cheapest way is to buy gold from the auctioneer and buy the packs yourself. If you've never bought gold from the auctioneer before, try these references:

If the price of gold is over 1 million, just start at 100,000 and multiply all the numbers by ten.

Example: Say you can buy gold for 438k (list price at the auctioneer). Look at 438k on the above chart and you see the corresponding SoF/feather prices are 8,335 and 6,668 and 5,001.
If there is no sale, that means buying the battle pet packs with gold means on average you're paying 8,335 coin per SoF/feather. If you see it priced for less on a cat shop, you're better buying it from that shop. If you see it priced for more, on average you will be better off buying the gold and getting the battle pet packs yourself. I say on average because you could get lucky or unlucky while opening the packs.
If pet packs are on sale for 40 silver each (instead of the normal 50 silver), then the magic number is 6,668 coin per SoF/feather.
If pet packs are on sale for 30 silver each, then the magic number is 5,001 coin per SoF/feather.
Usually the cheapest way is to buy gold from the auctioneer and buy the packs yourself. If you've never bought gold from the auctioneer before, try these references:

If the price of gold is over 1 million, just start at 100,000 and multiply all the numbers by ten.

I would add that the more packs you buy the accuracy of the ratio increases.
For example buying 100 packs will give you a more accruate ratio than buying 50.
The reason being that there are 5 different denomination possibilities of SoF/PF per pack which can really mess with the accuracy of the ratio with a low number of packs
I opened 424 packs last night and my ratio was about 27.5 SoF/PF per pack.
Last year I bought 40 packs and the ratio was about 22 to 23 SoF/PF per pack.
