I've searched forums and couldn't find an answer.

What's the difference between + Magic and + Magic Attack on an item?

What's better? +20 magic or + 20 magic attack.

Please break it down.

points into your characters stats, or
b) adds them to your total mana.
+ magic attack determines how hard
you hit with a spell. ^^

Depends entirely on your equipment and total magic. The formula supposedly is:

magic attack = (1 + mag/100 + bonus) * (level + equip_magic_attack)

mag = your mag stat
equip_magic_attack = sum of your weapon magic attack, and +magic_attack bonuses on your weapon (including shards) and rings
bonus = additions from things like sparks

I'm a little suspect as to its accuracy. It seems to come close but not quite right. There's probably also a level- and mag-based constant that's added to the overall score (i.e. your magic attack is not zero when you have nothing equipped). But it's really close.

As to which is better, it will depend on your exact scores, since one acts as a multiplier for the other. For my character, currently, each point of mag adds about +10 (calculated is +10) to overall magic attack, while each point of equipment magic attack adds about +3.4 (calculated is +3.44). So given that ring bonuses tend to only be +4 to +5 mag, but +14 to +27 magic attack at my level, the +magic attack tends to do me more good.

Mathematically, if you want to find the increase for +1 mag, ignoring that constant I mentioned, it's:

(level + equip_mag)/100

Likewise the increase for +1 magic attack, it's:

1 + mag/100 + bonus

where bonus is usually zero. Like I said, it's a little off so there's something missing. But the above should get you pretty close since in my experience it's only been off by about a percent or two.
