Figured I'd post this, seeing as the necro's are getting a bit out of hand here. I just closed a thread that was bumped from close to exactly a year ago. That's not good. So, next time you see a necro'd thread that isn't closed yet, feel free to post in it, including the word "necro" in your post. I run a search for that exact word daily, to see if I missed any threads someone else spotted. Thanks!
P.S. Post "necro" exactly. Necroo or necroing won't show up as search results. ;3

    How long until it becomes a necro? A week, a month? I usually call it after a week, but I might be wrong o.o

    Tempted to necro this. I usually consider it necro if its more than a month.

    Reminds me of a forum topic on another site I go to. The topic was to bump the topic two years later. 5 months to go!

    I close things for necro'ing if either of these are fulfilled:
    -The last post was 2 months ago.
    -The last post was between 1-2 months ago, and the necroing post was pointless.

    Huh, funny. Most moderators I know on other forums, like my little sister over at Spellhold, tend to take a firm stance that posting just to say that someone necroposted is just as bad as the necroposter themself.

    Calling it now: if this thread isn't locked, someone's going to necro it.

    On a side note, it's a good thing you'll search by topic instead of by post (I hope) since most replies in here will have the word necro.

    While the idea in itself isn't too bad, I can see it being abused to hell. Everyone who gets even slightly offended by another post would report it, and we'd have to check the thread for no particular reason. We (by which I mean me and Aryannamage) have enough work moderating all three forums as it is ;3 Hawk is only PWI, but he's usually quite busy too.

    Huh, I hadn't even noticed the lack of a report button. That is strange, seems like you're just making the job harder for moderators if you don't provide a report button.

    Eh, we need clarification on "necroing" threads.
    Alot of the time someone "necros" a thread but he/she is actually posting something thats useful.

    It seems that the word "necro" now means ANY post after 2 months, and it doesnt matter if its useful or not.
    I always see mods closing threads when the "necroer" posted something legit.

    Seems like if it's over 2 months, nothing should be posted, but if it's between one and two months, they can post with something to add to the thread. Over 2 months though, seems nothing is useful enough to necro it.

    The main issue with thread necomancy, IMO, is it causes confusion as many others will check and even reply to the thread without realising it's old and out-dated. In these cases (which is always), some may read and reply to previous repliers without realising that it's likely that A) the poster has left since B) the poster's opinion, knowledge, situation/condition, experience, etc has changed and changed vastly since or C) the poster forgot about his/her post and can't remember what he/she was dribbling on about and can't clarify either.

    And then there's the false rumour issue or causing a false alarm, such as reviving old threads from closed beta about a character wipe.

    The other issues are generally just annoyance, trolling or just an ugly sign that the necromancer foolishly found a thread just reading the first one or few posts without realising it's now out-dated and irrelevant.

    I thought the best way to get a mod's attention on threads that need moderating that hasn't for more than 2 days was to PM them about it.

    Won't it be ironic if this thread gets necro'd?

    Yes it would be too ironic if it does. It means someone searched for threads about necroing, so they are aware of it, and most likely deliberately disregarded the date of the first and last post. It may seem funny to them and a few others, but I wouldn't be surprised if it warranted a ban.

    why not just lock threads 2 months old?
    why not delete threads 2 months old?

    seems like it would fix the issue and people would post only new threads all the time. If that is what you guys want.

    I don't exactly agree on locking old threads. Sometimes people take a break from the game. And thus the forum. For months.

    They come back from summer vacation and see that the thread they made had died. But to the creator or even newbies information may exist in the thread that is relevant.

    It should be a case by case assessment of the thread. The entire thread should be read and only closed if contains pointless or outdated information. And even then if the original poster is editing the first post to update it; some careful thought/consideration should be made before locking.

    And if a thread is locked a better explanation should be provided other then. Don't necro old threads.

    These are just my thoughts.
