Occult Ice and the anti-stun skill (can't remember the name at the moment) are nice, and Cauterize has saved me many times from nix bleed.

Cauterize - mandatory if you don't feel like splashing out on anti bleed pots.
Fortify - useful so you don't get stunned out of sutra (5 seconds immune to stun)
If LA, Heart of Steel can prove very beneficial (immune to metal - clerics, archers)
    Tree of Protection - Mandatory

Alternatively, for a more offensive one, just choose Occult Ice, Extreme Poison, Tree of Proc, with a good ammount of vit and dex for modifiers\the ability to ice and poison, etc.

So would Cauterize, Occult Ice, Heart of Steel and Tree of Protection work well?

I like two defensive and two offensive skills, both with their different purposes.

    Offensive:
Frenzy (Great for when using an AoE)
Extreme Poison (Probably most commonly used one out there)
Spark (Good for using fire skills)
Occult Ice (Good stun but 10m range so hard for a mage to use)

    Defensive:
Tree of protection (Great HP heal)
Wind Shield (Not used as much but 30% reduction in damage at level 10)
Cauterize (I rather use tree of prot but good against bleed)
Holy Path (Great for running away or catching up)

I only named some but there's plenty out there you can use. I personally use frenzy, extreme poison, tree of protection and holy path.

Honestly Occult Ice is great defensive as well. It can be a bit unreliable, but it's better than nothing. I'm pretty sure I've saved quite a lot of party members by doing it to someone who just triple sparked.

And I'm so indecisive about genie skills, I might just go with a 80 mag one so I can get a 5th skill in. Amp/Occult/Holy Path/Cauterize/Windshield or Tree are all great depending on the situation. I still want to try out Spark and Frenzy too.
Wondering how much longer these **** packs are going to be around.

I use Blood clot / Badge of courage / Holy path / Extreme poison.

I might take out blood clot and replace it with tree of protection.

IMO, badge of courage is mandatory on a mage.

Why? I hardly ever feel the need to get out of stun. The only time I'd want to use it is against Occult Ice, but I dont even know if it works for that.

I can't count how many times i've survived ganks with badge of courage. Also 1v1 situations like against a BM or a Veno.

Ex: Pop blood clot, wait for veno to ironwood, pop badge of courage, sutra away.

I personally use Extreme poison, Blood Clot, Holy Path, and Occult Ice.
Against archers, I can blink near and sleep them with whisper.
Then I pop undine and extreme poison, and it gives me a pretty huge damage advantage against classes my level.

Blood Clot is obvious, I used to use cauterize but it failed me a LOT.
Now I just pop blood clot and take out the phoenix first.
It only takes me two hits to kill phoenixes my level now, so 11 seconds is more than enough.

Holy Path is kinda needed on the ground to chase people, since as a sage mage I have close to no enemy control (stun, disables... etc)

Occult ice is to counter those bms and barbs who come too near.
Plus when its on, it gives you ample time to pull off a nice sutra combo without being stopped.
We're one of the easier classes to use occult ice with really..
With distance shrink we can get near other ranged classes with ease.

Sins are Scissors. Psychics are Rocks.
Archers, Venos, Barbs, Wizards, BMs, Mystics, Seekers are Paper.
    ...and Clerics are Mushrooms.
Paper beats Rock. Scissors beats Paper. Scissors also happens to beat Rock...until Rock gets 50k+ soulforce at which point Rock becomes an unstoppable killing machine that beats Paper... and would beat Scissors but it can't find Scissors, because Scissors are invisible.
So Scissors beat Paper and avoids Rock, and that is called BALANCE. -cheze

He uses Dicipline genie. Imo good lucky points help but are not necessary. Type of Genie is really upto you since it doesn't really matter.

I feel the need of choosing the right genie IMO , for example you wont need str for a fully supportive(debuff / buff) genie , therefore infliction starting with 15 str isnt really suitable for a supportive genie.

Another question, what stats do I have to put into the genie?

I dont feel the need of investing in MAG since it doesnt really help alot in speeding up the energy recovery...

If ya get 40 MAG you can get another genie skill slot, so most people get mag to 40.
You're right about the type of genie, except seeing as there is no good phys damage genie attack, str genies aren't so useful for wizards. Most wizards use genies for buffs/debuff so dex is useful.
There are three types of people in the world,
Those that can count, and those that can't count.

I'm sooo surprised no one mentioned bramble rage. This skill hits HAs in close proximity for 3.5-4k+, amped to 8k+ in HF; pop that right as I'm casting bids & now I'm hitting a group of HAs for 11k (bids, x2 if crit) + 8k(x2 if crit)...

    My ideal genie:
    poison
    frenzy
    cauterize
    holy path
    bramble rage

Alternatively, for a more offensive one, just choose Occult Ice, Extreme Poison, Tree of Proc, with a good ammount of vit and dex for modifiers\the ability to ice and poison, etc.

Fortify is only 3 seconds base, and every 30 dex increases it by 1 second.

I would say no to Heart of Steel because if you have fash the archers and clerics will be expecting a wiz to be arcane.

For wizards, Tree < Second wind, If you do the math Tree isn't really worth it unless you have around 4k+ hp, otherwise per genie stat point Second wind heals more. SW is also an instant heal, which doesn't require as much timing as Tree.

My main genie right now is fitted with:
    Second wind
    Fortify
    Holy Path
    Extreme poison

And im thinking I will make a TW specific genie with:
    Frenzy (AoEs)
    Holy path
    Second wind
    Cloud eruption (?)
