The Elements

So far I've been paying VERY little attention to the "elements" aspect of the game, other than seeing that my armor items have *some* element resistence.

I'm also aware that there's a rock-paper-scissors relationship among the 5 elements, but I obviously don't know what it is.

And so far, I'm doing just fine!! :-)

So, I ask, is this element thing way underused or does it actually make a difference later on in the game?? I've seen other games implement it so much better...

BTW, it also bothers me to no end that the changes in weather (day, night, rain, etc.) only exist for cosmetic reasons. It'd be really awesome if mobs behaved diferently under different weather, and weapons worked better or worse in different conditions too.

At least in my experience most armor gives resitance to all elements unless it's blue and it's added stat is +a resistance. So if you have a lot of element resisting armor you'll take less damage from casters. Same with taking less damage from melee damage with heavy armor.

As a Barb, I don't think elements play much of a role for you, since for the most part you're doing Physical damage. Although you do have a Wood damage buff, and that portion of your damage would be reduced against Wood mobs and increased against Earth mobs ... but really, primarily you just care if the mob has high Physical defense or not.

It plays more of a role with magic-based classes - especially Wizard (since they can choose between Fire, Water, and Earth spells). But still, I wouldn't say it makes a huge difference.

Not true at all ... quest rewards or NPC-bought yes ... but not mob drops or crafted - they're quite often missing one or more of the elements. Personally, I find that very annoying ... I suppose some people might find them useful, but IMO if it doesn't have all the elements it's junk.

If you target the mob, below its hp bar is some additional info. One of these is the mob's element. If you hover your mouse over that element, it'll pop up a list of elements and their vulnerabilities.

They won't make much difference to a barbarian, since you're mostly dealing physical damage. I got into a debate with my guild about whether elemental shards might be better for a melee weapon than physical shards, given the extreme price differential. But you shouldn't have to worry about that until you're level 70+.

The elements are actually the ones used for days of the week in Asian culture. Kinda funny, but I guess an obvious choice if you want 5 elements.
