It's a VoIP software (Imagine a conference call ability to talk to alot of people at one time.) Many Games have built in Squad/Guild Speech programs. Vent aka Ventrilo a very good program to use for talking like a phone to 1 or more people (Servers have different limits as to how many are allowed on at same time.)
The Free option is another program it's decent called TeamSpeak

Think that answers your questions... GSM does similar many many programs out there.0 -
It's a 3rd party program many people use while playing games.
It allows you to communicate to others with a microphone.0 -
Ventrilo is a voice chat client used primarily by gamers to say things quickly in situations where typing would be too slow. It is particularly useful when utilized during FB/TT/TW or pretty much any activity in Perfect World that requires a squad, as you can talk to your squad members by simply holding down a button on your keyboard. You don't even have to have the Ventrilo client window visible on your screen to talk. If you're really lazy, you can set it to activate the mic every time you talk. But then everyone on your vent channel will hear your every sneeze, cough, etc.
Anyway, it makes squadding about 1000% more efficient. I don't know why everyone doesn't use it.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Not everyone has a mic they can use. Or they are on a laptop in a place where such a thing would be difficult, such as in a college dorm room, library, or any public place that you might want to play. There's probably any number of other reasons why people don't use this, even if it is useful for situations like those you mentioned.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

A few things: 1: Answering your question, most computers will have a jack for headsets somewhere, either on the speakers or on the computer itself. I think most these days even use a USB port. After that, it depends of the type, but you may be able to use it just as is, but I think there may be some that need you to install some software (not sure about this last part though).
2: This has nothing to do with the question you asked, but with the post itself. If you look above the posts, you can see the date and time of the last post. If you post in a thread in which the last post was more than 1-3 months (depending on who you ask), this is called necroing a thread. This is not a good thing for various reasons (i.e: old/outdated info, bad thread or just plain lack of any real interest). Since the last post in this thread was made way back in '09, this is such a necro. As a general rule, stick to threads on the first or second pages of the forums to avoid necroing threads. While you should always use the search function first when you have a question to see if it was already answered in a previous thread, if it has not, then you're better off making a new thread instead of digging up an old one.
Hope these help you out, both with your question and general forum rules and etiquette. b:thanks[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
