Genie Question....

Alright I've come back to the game after an extended break....and I noticed this new fellow in town that game me this little zeal genie.....what does it do, I've heard its like a little sidekick for your charater ok thats kool but, how do I level them up. People are saying SP and Exp from your actual toon, but how do I do that? If someone could refer me to a Genie Guide, that would rock but I havent found one yet.
