the level 17 Crystaline Magmite. You will be using it forever, or until you get a Herc. (and you may still use it after as a backup pet)

Agree completely. Magmite is the way to go.

Varicose Scorpion is the lowest starter pet I have aside from the legendary pets. The next lowest is the Eldergoth Marksman (lvl. 41). The magmite can enable you to tank mobs and bosses you couldn't with other pets, but it's painfully slow and will be just a waste of pet bag space when you get a Herc. Maybe pet speed isn't important to some, but it makes a difference on speed of killing, and getting ambush mobs off you. It will empower you to do more for now, but I wouldn't consider it a keeper.

If someone is just starting, the scorpion would be on the squishy side of things, making it a little harder for them to grind. The golem, in my opinion, is much more forgiving in that aspect, since it is not squishy at all ,and it still has high atk.
Although I would recomend grabing a scorpion sooner or later, since it is a gread DD pet.

It'd be much easier to level a Golem than a Scorpion after the fact because the Scorpion is squishy. So, you'd be better off leveling a Scorpion as you go, IF you want the best ground dd pet. You probably wouldn't miss it if you didn't have one though.
