So usually(from general assumption) a venomancer has different types of pets for different purposes. That being:
    • ground pet
    • flying pet
    • water pet
    • luring pet

with the ground pet being of the defensive type with argo inducing skills, the flying being more offense orriented with skills such as flesh ream, the water pet for..., the luring pet for ...luring which is either very fast and can take a few hits (enough to be unsummoned before death) or has a ranged attack.

so in these general areas, what pets would be recommended?, exempting herc for ground and pheonix for flying

Ground - CMag/VMag, bear cub, one of the beetles and the things that look like a beetle, Antelup pup, frog
Air - Sawfly or piggy (sawfly high damage, piggy low damage high defenses)
      Water - Turtle
Utility - Scorpion with Pierce, Howl, Threaten and Shrill
Lure - Any pet with a speed of 9.0+ m/s will be a good lurer. At lower levels, pretty much anything faster than a CMag will work.

      Water: Never got one
Luring: Crystaline Magmite (Moves slow but it got the job done)

      Sage Barbarian Malego - 91

Could someone please explain to me why a fast pet is needed for luring? I've been luring with my magmite since lvl 17 and it's worked every time. What are the advantages of a fast pet for luring? just faster?

Part of the advantage is that if it has to run through a group of mobs, it can outrun any it happens to aggro and run up to the one it needs to use its skill on. That way, it won't take many hits from other mobs and it will still be able to bring you back the mob you are luring.

Also, at higher level you start to run into more mobs with ranged attacks (archers and spellcasters). These will start to attack you sooner than melee mobs, when they are still some distance away. So to have enough time to resummon your pet in time to intercept the mob before it attacks you, you need to start the lure from further away. Waiting for a golem to cover that extra distance seems to take forever.

Not to mention that after level 40ish some of the mobs you have to lure are on steroids and run really fast.....
