Refining??

Will someone please explain to me what refining is and what benefit it offers us?

    If you refine an item it increases the stats on it... some refined armor give more HP, others Defense, etc. Not sure how it exactly works though.

    Also pwdatabase now lists refining bonuses on all equiptment
    Currently flying internet spaceships around dodixie, moving to amarr soon.
