Im a very skilled archer but ive encountered constant debates on whether take aim is a skill to be invested in, im a pve player at the moment and i need to know if i should take it or no, ive found it usefull as a great opener but people stress to say no to it for some reason please explain your view on if i should up it or not

its cast time takes forever and on my archer i can do just as much damage with the quicker lightning strike so i stoped lvling it up but i still use it as the first attack some times.

Cast time decreases and damage increases.. level it slowly until you get deadly shot. I still use it as an opener though.

Last I heard anyone with a big name in the archer community talk about it, they were pretty against it at lower levels. Since it's based on base damage, you won't be getting any real sort of power with it until you get to the tt/hh60 xbow.
Besides that, I never used it after I got knockback and frost arrow. From there, plain sailing.
For pvp/tw deadly shot generally seems better.

If you get 1 strength and 4 dexterity every level, your base mana recovery rate will never grow. Your mana recovery rate, when you are level 100, will match your level 1 mana recovery rate. You can compensate for this with gear, with consumables and with winged shell, but you will have to deal with your mana costs somehow.

Since you get 15 chi from take aim, and you can use chi for all sorts of things, keeping take aim on level 1 makes chi building fast and cheap (10 mana and 0.6 seconds will get you 15 chi). In comparison, level 10 take aim would cost100 mana and still only get you 15 chi.

You need to decide when economy turns into false economy -- when your costs from not having leveled this skill outweigh your savings. But once you level a skill, you can never go back, so you might want be cautious about when you level this skill.

I personally keep it maxed. I find it the best opener for PvE grinding. You'll do roughly the same damage as if you opened with Frost Arrow, but you'll gain Chi instead of spending it, and you can Winged Shell to get the mana back (keeping Winged Shell maxed will keep up with the cost of Take Aim). As a result, I generally only have to use mana potions when I'm fighting things stronger than me, and that equates to savings.

I may regret this at higher levels and PvP, but it's certainly making it easier for me to get there.

you won't regret this at higher lvls, 70+ with good wep and lvl 10 take aim outdamages lvl 10 deadly shot

I'm not 70+ yet so it might be 80+ that take aim outdamages deadly shot, really just depends on how good a wep you got

I use deadly shot instead of take aim, I dont know why, I just seem to crit more on it as an opener. I love seeing half a mobs HP vanish in one shot lol.

But I got the 89 book for take aim recently, so I have leveled it to max in preperation for when I hit 89.

Who knows, maybe I'll try it out as my occasional opener xD

I find opening with Deadly Shot or Take Aim on mobs isnt as affective as just simple Frost Arrow and attack-attack-.. To me take aim is not a pve skill but more of a skill to gain chi in pvp or tw. If you cancel it right away, it shoots about same speed as crossbow regular attack, but gains 15 chi. Spam it often in pvp is always good. It is a low level, and therefore cheap skills, why not get it to level 10?

It is very important that you mention it that you are on a PvE server, because imo, Take Aim doesn't worth it even at level 60. My argumentation is very simple : PvE server's main concern will be grinding. So using Take Aim as a daily opener for questing and grinding is not a good idea (we are talking about the fully channeled Take Aim). If you kill mobs you need speed, not stand and wait 3-4 seconds for channeling. At the end of, let's say 2hours of grinding, you will end up with less mobs killed and more time spent on channeling. Those few seconds may not seem a lot, but they stack up in time, so they will make a difference.

I do use Take Aim as opener, but only to build up CHI - so i don't let the skill channel, I just cancel it immediate after.
A a side note : if I cast a Winged Shell on me, I may use the 20sec defense for attacking 2 mobs. But, if I would use a channel skill, i wouldn't have time to to all that, killing them both in 20sec.

Conclusion : I don not consider Take Aim an effective opener until late game.
Hope I gave you some pointers. Others may debate my opinion and if so, you will manage to have a pretty clear picture on this skill as an opener.

    Cheers mate!

Personally, I open with fully channeled, unleveled take aim, instead of frost arrow, on sacrificial assault (and maybe weak) monsters.

I mostly use fully channeled take aim because of its imposed delay (i wear regen gear for grinding, and a few extra non-combat seconds sometimes can be nice).
