Windowed mode sound issue

When playing windowed mode, with the sound sliders all turned to 0, some sounds still play randomly. eg when near blacksmith his hammering plays at full volume looping constantly until turning the volume slider up and back down to 0. When night comes, the owl sound loops constantly, on full volume. etc. Some sounds play once and stop. Often when switching from another app back to PWI any sounds going on will play and stop when they are done eg an attack sound.

This is really annoying.

I know there's a workaround in vista, but unfortunately Im running XP for now. I realise this is PW and nothing ever gets fixed unless it was previously working, so can I remove/rename the ambiencestereo folder to stop this irritating behavior? Or will this workaround get me banned?

Removing or renaming them (or any PWI file and folder) would most likely generate error messages or even stop your game from working entirely. Why do you want to mute the game audio anyway?

Now that I think of it, DirectSound does tend to play currently 'playing' sound effects suddenly upon switching back to the program at full volume regardless of the volume settings. It means that it doesn't disable the sound, just merely set the volume to 0 or almost 0.
    Non-mule alts:
