Magic weapons. I don't think it really matters if you use a pataka, wand, magic sword or whatever.
    I wanna give you some good frequencies. 1710, 2.6, 2245, 3032, 400.

actually it does matter even if you take pure damage without yammy blue highlighted bonuses.b:surrender

If you're crit/spike lover you'll go for max high end weapons. If you're like more stable you'll go for max low end. And there is Huge difference especially when weapons are 80+ and refined at least +7. b:victory

P.S WoF is most horrible weapons in Mages arsenal due to it's rarety in comparison to it's VERY low effectivness. b:sin

I think wands are best because they have constant damage at the high end of the magic attack range

My path through weapons until now:
    -lvl 19 - Trial wand
-lvl 33 - Raybender with a mattk modifier
-lvl 39 - some 39 wand that dropped north of Archos (didn't liked it , but was for a few lvls, so I just waited until my WoL was ready to equip.
    -lvl 43 - Wheel of Life + 3 ( mold drop in my fb39)
    -lvl 60 - Ancient Arbor + 3
    -lvl 70 - TT70 Wand +4

I hated the Arbor for not being reliable in dmg. Was nice to see from time to time big numbers, but since I'm focused mostly on PvE , the big gap difference in the Arbor's mattk lead to sittuations I hate: being hit by mobs. Happened rarely, but it did. I have no HP recovery on gear, so for all those small hits, in the end I had to use a pot to restore HP. Not expensive, but I just didn't like it.
My stile of play is: get the best combo to kill a mob without being hit, put it in a macro. From there on: press macro key, relax, get loot, go to next mob, repeat. With the arbor, sometimes all spells did minimum dmg or the SS nuke did minimum ( 600 hit diff on Hydrolace ) just made me get hit sometimes.
Now, with the TT 70 Wand all that changed. I have constant dmg. I know if I create a combo that will work for 1 mob for sure it will work for all mobs ( except increase life and mag res ofc). This gives me the peace of mind I was looking for and from my PoV this is for me the best wpn. Some ppl just hate the wand, but I love it. Wizard spells maxed have huge wpn attk bonuses (300%) plus, the path is not to be ignored at TT80 or TT90.
Yesterday I tried to see if I can grind efectively at Dragonmaids near Nameless Isle ( lvl 78 water mobs). To my happiness those are 3 shots(SS-Pyro-SR) and I get 49x xp and 98sp/normal mob. A guildie cleric was passing by and I asked him to switch with his Ashura's Sign (tt70 sword +4 also) just to try and see the dmg diff. The dmg range was wider and indeed the spike dmg was higher (when happened) than what Ive got with my wand, but in 4 out of 11 mobs I tried I had to cast a 4th spell - gush or pitfall or any other quick finisher - and I was getting hit once for about 220 I think ( don't remember exactly). He didn't really liked my wand, and didn't liked at all his Ashura.

There is no absolute best weapon, but the nice thing is we have an array of choices and each and every one can find something that fits perfectly for his needs

    sinrabansho - the end b:victory
Sins are Scissors. Psychics are Rocks.
Archers, Venos, Barbs, Wizards, BMs, Mystics, Seekers are Paper.
    ...and Clerics are Mushrooms.
Paper beats Rock. Scissors beats Paper. Scissors also happens to beat Rock...until Rock gets 50k+ soulforce at which point Rock becomes an unstoppable killing machine that beats Paper... and would beat Scissors but it can't find Scissors, because Scissors are invisible.
So Scissors beat Paper and avoids Rock, and that is called BALANCE. -cheze

in order from most useful to not:

    sword, quoite, wand, banner staff

sword being the more useful to us because of it's moderate spikes on both end. we're not here to play a guessing game with a banner staff, we're here to kill deal big numbers at a constant rate and look good while we do it.

banner staff makes you look like a panzy.

Pataka's range is too wild to use effectively, prof got it right Magic Swords are the DD weapon of choice for a wiz.

A lot of clerics favour Wands for the constant damage(I guess they can't afford spikes and dips whilst healing). Quoite's are kinda crappy, but maybe that's because I was using one for the 12 hardest levels of the game so far.

I haven't unse Morning Dew in more than 20 lvl on myself. I used it occasionally in FB runs combined with sutra to get someone out of trouble ( usually clerics venos getting aggro).

I did a short math, the average damage on both the Ashura and Acalanatha at +4 is 716. So basically with a few exception when u crit on a high dmg output, it's just a matter of taste. The dmg output over time I would say it's the same.

    Nature Talker > Sinrabansho.

Anyways, the general weapon of choice tends to be the magic swords later, with quoits running second, wands for the vast minority, and most agree that patakas are just too random for a class with such slow skills.

Sword holds the closest stability to the wand while still allowing for some spikes (as Prof said), wands are for those who dislike spikes altogether and don't mind a bit less DPS, and quoits tend to be used when they either have awesome bonuses that beat out all the swords, or when someone is bored and just wants a new weapon. Allows for more spike damage for slightly less reliable range than swords, but nothing like how random patakas are.

But which is the harder to get, Sinranbasho requires a mat which looks as though it will never drop. The rank required for Nature talker, anyone know the rep requirement?

I actually think the TT90 glaive is way superior then the TT90 magic sword.

I know, that's why I listed "when they have awesome bonuses that beat out all the swords" as a reason for using a quoit. :P Wheel of Denied Fate is much more easily obtained as well.

200k rep is doable when you're high leveled and have nothing better to do with your money. Spam marriages and get candies tbh, and spam FBs. It's impractical, just saying there's pretty much always something "better" out there. There is still something even stronger than the NT.

@Mizo: As for the looks? I prefer the NT personally. :\ I was never a fan of them reusing the 'keyblade' look of TT70 with a new paintjob for Sanra. Loved it on the TT70, but hate it when they reuse looks. x_x

nature talker is way better than sin in my opinion, yeah its got -6% channeling.. but that 6% channeling is going to decrease total casting time of the spell (including casting) by about 4%... so thats 4% more damage in the long run, but look at the nature talkers damage!!

even with 4% more damage in the longrun it will still be well behind the nature talker
