resistances and monster type question

OK so you have a monster. It says it's an earth type.
If it casts at you, it's going to be tested against your earth resistance stat?
If it runs over and hits/bites you, is it also doing earth damage or is that just physical resistance and evasion?
Or does it really just depend on the monster, whether it's doing physical or magical damage, and the type listed under the name is just related to what it's vulnerable to, not necessarily what it will be doing to you?
Thanks!
I'm getting to the point while practicing crafting that I have 2 or more of the same armor that is strong in this or that resistance, I can see some swapping out depending what I'm fighting...but I'm confused as to how that works. Haven't seen a lot about resistances and mechanics in the beginner faqs either.

It really relates to its vulnarability.
As far as I know, all melee hits are physical. Ranged attacks aren't as cut and dry. Regardless of element affinity, archer type mobs are dealing physical damage. Even the snarls that hurl big rocks at you I believe do physical rather than earth damage.
You really don't see a lot of magic using mobs until 50+.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~0 -
thanks...venomous ghouls outside Archosaur were casting some sort of dot on me, and they are like 20 I think. Guess I'll play it by ear.0

Yup...you can sort of guage it by the color. The green color (and most poison) will be wood type. If something big and red hits you, it's probably fire. Sadly, it's just not 100% so I really can't say "all the time", you know?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~0

Wood mobs if they have range attack ( 99% they do) they use wood element(Ghols lvl 21 near archo poison)or earth(Treefolks lvl21 slowing spell) and of course all nice lvl ~50 Wood loves wood/earth based debuffs.
Agree with previous post about Stone/Rock throwers they do Physical damage. Only need confirmation on "Swamp" Riders near Wrathgate if their "dark" magic is wood because they cast something close to Venos wood Poison Nova judjing by it's animation.Fire spell of riders mentioned before not tested yet if it's pure fire or mini version of wizards Blade Tempest.0
