Is this a skill worth getting for my barb or is it useless. I have using the skill before on previous barb i had and it was ok in dmg but drained a lot of my mp.

    Get level 1 swell. You need it to get slam, which is a much better aoe.

    OK Swell is a 90 Degree Arc type AE... it's not a priority or anything as most have said Slam is our good one.. Bestial Onslaught, Perdition, Slam... This does have it's situational uses.
    Granted if you need to AE without the Knockback then Onslaught is the one you want but you can use Swell as well. To use swell properly make sure the path of your Axe/Hammer goes to the final guy from Left to right... so target far right mob with mobs to your left and it's effective in that way.
