So how much, in US dollars, would the phoenix be? If my conversions are right its something like $180.00! Plus you have to keep it fed! How much would that end up coming to (using tomes or whatever from the cash shop) in maintinence costs?

you dont need USD to buy it at all
with in game coin the minimum you can get it is approx 18-19m, max being 22.
need another 200k to teach it flesh ream,
another 1m to up it to level 5
~1.5m if youre on sanctuary for a level 1 tome. (auto feeds pets forever)
maybe ~200k for a couple venison to keep loyalty

    and thats your cost there

How long would I expect to get it in game though? I'm only lvl 12 atm and have like 7k...

20m is insane, that must take like 1 year of play.

PS (not that I plan to buy it with real money anyway) was I right about the USD amount if one were to buy it?

I think different people wind up with different dollar costs for phoenixes. Of course, you get random amounts of feathers and sources, and some people buy golds with coins instead of dollars, but also last weekend, gold was 15% off and battle packs were on sale (and maybe they had some kind of luck thing going for people opening battle packs)?

If you ignore sales and luck and in-game coins, I have seen numbers like $158 for a phoenix. But, last week, a lot of people got them for much less.

Feeding them takes hay but low level characters can get hay from tortoises, rhinos and (later on) antelope. If you want you can also get a tome or a blessing to help defray your costs. Level 80 characters can get blessings along with a chain of other goodies for $10 (assuming you paid full price for your golds), and tomes cost maybe $4 plus some fragments from rebirth. (You can also buy one week books for I think $2-ish, which might cost you $8/month until you can get something better -- but if you play enough for this to be worthwhile you might also play enough to be gathering enough hay, so you could feed your bird some hay whenever its loyalty dropped 50 points.)
How long would I expect to get it in game though?

This would depend on your level -- high level characters earn coins faster than low level characters. For example: Level 79 skills will cost you 1 million coins for each skill. Higher level skills might cost 3 million each. (Belittle and Arcane Antimony.) This will take some time to earn, of course, but your time should be measured in hours, and not in weeks (unless you do not play very often, or maybe you have other priorities you need to be spending money on).

As you get to higher levels, you start making more.

Just remember to pick up pretty much anything that drops, and vendor what you don't need or cannot sell to another player (DQ).

i started working for my herc when i was 60, took about 2 weeks of no life, 18 hour a day farming of materials and loots.

as of now, im lazy and lethargic, solo FB89, and do rebirth once a night, and after 4 nights I have 7k feathers for my phoenix, so yeah, higher level you get the more you make

While I have your attention, we mine as well make this thread complete with info needed for pets.

So 9,999 feathers or force stones to get a legendary pet ticket(?)

How much coin per feather (or feather group?) should one expect?

Can one just buy the leg ticket instead of gathering up all the mats?

Anywhere from 1.5k - 2.5k per item, 2k on average, and the chances of finding someone who went through the trouble to get enough to get the pet ticket and is selling it is not very high, and even then you're looking at 20-25 mil to buy the ticket as the pet egg itself isn't tradeable, just the ticket is.

Mind if I suggest using the search function, or reading the stickied threads at the top of this forum?

Battle-pet packs don't contain any set amount of feathers or SoF. Each pack contains 10-50. Last weekend, with the 15% bonus zen and pet pack sale, you coulda had one for about $100-$125. Normally, it seems people spend about $160-$200.

I would avoid buying feathers/SoF in the game. Save up your coin, trade for gold and buy pet packs. While you'll often get packs of 10, you'll also get packs with a lot more, so you'll end up saving more coin when it averages out.

As for that being a lot of coin, yes it is, but if you farm mid-mats you can make enough for a nix in several weeks.

Please note that coin cost of each feather/source depends on your server. Prices differ from server to server. LC sells them anywhere from 2-3k a piece, feathers closer to 3k.

Xmas blessings can be had for ~1.2m now on LC due to the Supply Stash.

    Not exactly.

If you can buy the gold at 100k each, and you get an average of ~26.8 per pack, then the average in coin would be ~1.8k per feather/SoF. At 107k per gold, the average will be ~2k per feather/SoF, and at the current gold prices on HT (114k) the average would be ~2.1k. This means you are at the mercy of the gold sellers if you use this method, and the only way to get 100k per gold is to jump on the offers of players who offer that over WC, and even then you might get a really bad streak of luck.

On the other hand, if you shop around, you can find Feathers/SoF for ~2k in cat shops, and you can use the AH to get some really good deals at less than 2k (not always) on them.

So, buying gold with in-game coin to get the Battle Pet Packs might get you more, but that could randomly backfire, or you could get a guaranteed amount for the same amount of coin. Just remember that at current HT prices you're almost better off buying from other players @2k or less.

If you use the numbers on pwdatabase, the average works out to 26.8 per pack, which means you'd need $186.50 worth of packs on average. I've seen reports as low as $150 and as high as $220. Mine ended up just under that cost at 185.5 gold. I converted coin at rates ranging from 102k-106k, so in total it ended up just over 19 million. Replacing Pounce with Bash and leveling it up will cost you another cool million.
There's also a 2% transaction fee to exchange coin. So the the cost per feather/SOF at the various exchange rates are:

    100k - 1903
    101k - 1922
    102k - 1941
    103k - 1960
    104k - 1979
    105k - 1998
    106k - 2017
    107k - 2036
    108k - 2055
    109k - 2074
    110k - 2093
    115k - 2188
    120k - 2284
    125k - 2379
    130k - 2474
    140k - 2664
    150k - 2854
    (gold price * 1.02) / (26.8 * 2)

Yeah. I think you should save your money and shop around for a deal. of course i was extremely lucky and had 14mill with me the weekend that battle pet packs went on sale =0. And I would not buy gold from the AH 'cause of the fees :(

I'm doing mine almost entirely off buying gold in the trader and then opening packs. Cat shops are selling the stuff at 2600-2800 each, while gold is 123k each (right now). It's not even close as to which is the cheaper way to do it. Though right after the pet pack sale I did find a guy selling packs at 60k each (gold was almost 135k to put in a buy order at the time), so I took advantage of that.

My point was it's better to buy the items from other players, and not the CS. The only time you will get 1g for 100k is when someone uses WC to advertise that in which case there is no 2% transaction fee.
