EQUALITY in America isn’t realism.

Racism-

A recent poll on startribune.com has shown that every 3 out of 10 or 30% of Americans are biased.

Mr. Purnell said: "In the past too many were left behind in bad times. Ethnic minority workers suffered most in the Tory recessions.

The fact that people can still classify us by race shows that we are still not represented equally. If he felt that we were equal he would have said Americans had suffered in the Tory recessions, and not classified us by our ethnicity. Though the black race has been freed through the emancipation proclamation and our country has open arms to all who want to live in “The home of the free,” it’s obvious that they are still highly discriminated against because of their race and culture.

Devah Pager, a sociologist at Northwestern University, studied employers' treatment of job applicants in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by dividing job applicants into four groups. White applicants and black applicants were further grouped into those who presented themselves as having a prior criminal conviction and those who did not present themselves as having a criminal record.

As you can see white males had a considerably higher callback rate even when comparing the callback rate of black males with no criminal record to white males with a criminal record. This only goes to show how little equality there is for anyone living in the United States.

Religious freedom-

People are continually discriminated against for their beliefs. Many generalizations are being made against them because of what they believe in. It’s become much harder for people to express their religious views without being ridiculed for believing in something different than another person. Here are some past attacks that happened across the U.S.A to people who simply were trying to practice their religious beliefs
• August 12, 2007: A lone gunman, Eiken Elam Saimon, opened fire in a Missouri Micronesian church, killing a pastor and two other churchgoers.
• May 20, 2007: A standoff between police and a suspect in the shootings of three people in a Moscow, Idaho, Presbyterian Church ended with three dead, including one police officer.
• May 21, 2006: Louisiana. Four were killed by a man at Jesus Christ Church
Religious intolerance will only to continue to cause the harm of more people, not only physically but mentally as it takes its toll on the family members of the victims of religious persecution. Religious equality truly is nonexistent.

**** rights-

**** are not considered equal in society because they do not have the right to marry as they wish and their lives are often filled with much ridicule because of their decision.
On Monday, May 31, 2004 **** rights activists who wore a rainbow-colored sash during Pentecost services were denied communion in Chicago. Apparently, some Roman Catholic leaders object to expressions of support to the **** movement when it occurs in the context of church services.
"The priest told me you cannot receive communion if you're wearing a sash, as per the Cardinal's direction," said James Luxton, a fanatic supporter of **** rights.

Another time in September of 2006 California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger decides to veto a **** marriage law. He justified his decision by claiming that passing the bill would be unconstitutional based on a referendum passed in 2000 that the state of California only accepts the marriage of a man and a woman.

This only serves to prove that Americans who hope to be treated equally no matter their sexual orientation are going to be severely disappointed.

Women’s rights-

Many men and, sadly in my opinion, even a few women feel that a women’s place is out of the limelight and “In the kitchen.” Many men still believe they are much better than a woman and that the only place they belong is cooking, cleaning and/or watching the kids at home. It’s also obvious that many men feel that women should not be empowered because they are scared that a woman may do a better job then them

Here is an example of how men don’t feel that women deserve to be in the same position as a man because it is simply not their place. This only goes to show that women are still struggling to attain equality.


Economic equality-

“Men feel that cruelty to the poor is a kind of cruelty to animals. They never feel that it is an injustice to equals; nay it is treachery to comrades.”-Gilbert Keith Chesterton

I believe that this is an example of how things work in American society. The middle class and poor get poorer while the rich get richer. It’s an awful system. The rich become richer without having to put a day’s work in. They use the money they are already making off their company’s to create more companies and collect the revenue. They have no worry about getting laid off or sick days because they do not work for their money. Where is the equality in this?
While this happens the poor have to focus on income that they earn themselves. They can’t sit back and watch the money poured in from their million dollar investments in other companies. They have to get a job as quick as possible in order to sustain themselves and sometimes a whole family. While this is going on, wages continue to drop at the same time general expenses go up on everyday items such as gas, food, and clothing. It makes it nearly impossible to survive in this economy. The poor are sucked dry until they can no longer support themselves.




How we are affected-

I feel that in my life I have been affected by each of these issues at some time. Whether it was me being asked to become involved, or me hearing about happenings in my community. We are also affected in the way that the things that go on here in America affect how we are perceived by other nations and nationalities. If you don’t like what you see going on in the country then take action to prevent it.

What is your current or most recent profession?
-I was a contract negotiator for _________ company.

Did you enjoy your experience there?
?-I did for the most part.

Did you feel you were treated equally?
?-No, I don’t not feel like I was treated equally . I was a top employee within the organization and was denied promotions because of favoritism for another worker.

Is it possible that your maltreatment at Aetna was because you were a woman?
?-I have never been treated differently because I am a woman. But I do know it takes place in many areas within the company.

What is your stance on equality in the workplace?
?-I feel that the workplace would be a more equal place if Management stepped up and took responsibility for their mistakes instead of punishing their employees.

Can you tell us of a situation where a woman was discriminated against because of her
gender?
?-A woman was part of a organization for 5 years and was told she was up for a promotion. She had earned this but unfortunately new management had taken over the area. He was a male and decided to promote an individual who he recruited from his prior organization. When she went to speak to him about this, he told her that he did not feel a woman deserved the promotion over a man. This newly promoted individual knew nothing about the job but in the end; she did not receive what she was qualified for due to her sex or favoritism of a past employee. He has had several complaints in the past about his management.

How did it make you feel to know that many people in the workplace around you were being discriminated against?
?-I felt angry, because these employees had worked just as hard as anybody and deserved to be treated equally. However on the flipside is that that is everyday life in the workplace.
