question about pvp servers

ive been reading and reading about people complaining on the random pk in pvp servers, the whole 'roll pve if you dont want to die' etc.. etc...
i have a serious question, for high levels, if they see a white name, is that pretty much instant death? or do you have gennerally have to aggrivate someone before they kill you?
like, is it possible to find a group to go questing with in a pvp sever? or is it purely just a "i see you, im going to kill you" type of experience.
i truly and honestly hope not, i mean having the option to kill people is nice, but unwarrented just seems weird. how is one to finish hard quests, world bosses etc if you cant trust a soul?
so please, im asking very nicely, is it anywhere near as bad as the forum whiners say it is? or is it pretty chill, just with the option to kill and be killed..

It depends on that individuals mindset or mood. Generally, it's not once you hit level 30 you'll be instantly be pk'd. If you're in an area like the Secret Passage, Anglers Village or a popular pk spot there's a chance you'll be hit. If you aggravate someone, they might shrug it off or take out their frustration on you. If they're having a crappy day, then it's the same thing. Not really an excuse, but that's how that person handles things.
If you're in a guild that is on KOS, guildless (they think you're a loner or no one will back you up if they attack you), defenseless (no way you can win with the level gap), or you **** them off, yes, some people will attack you. It all depends on how you both handle the situation. I mean, if you absolutely know there's no way you can defend or defeat that person, there's nothing wrong with shrugging it off. If you're cussing them out and calling them names, then yeah, they may keep you company for a while.
If you're questing in a group, someone won't always come to crash it. It happens but you can always try another time. If you're attacked by a certain player or group in the same area, take note of their ign, guild, fellow guild members or accomplices. And whenever you see an angry little green dot heading in your direction on minimap, press T to see if it's them to prepare yourself.
Just use that as motivation to get stronger and level up. In short, it can be annoying, but it isn't impossible to enjoy the server.0 -
thankyou very much demise! that was a very well written post.
see, i came from a game where pvp was set from factions, so it wasnt you vs everyone, at minimal there was some allies around leveling just as you were, (think wow, alliance vs horde).
ive never played a free for all type of pvp game, so i was hesitant to roll on a pvp server, i tried heavens tear for a bit, but its lame..
hopefully harshlands will be nice, seems like theres a few people who consider themselves "pro" usually the jerks in the server, but im sure i can hold my own if its a pk'er around my level..
like you said the super levelers that are 20lvs above, or group of gankers, im sure ill have no chance, but if its that determined by them that im going to die, i guess im going to die, lol
thanks for the post demise0 -
I have to somewhat disagree with the above response. For most people, you would have to aggrivate them or they'll otherwise leave you alone. These are the people who tend to respond on the forums saying PvP servers arent that bad, cause they're not the kill on sight type. Also, if you got a high level early, you have alot more breathing room as there are alot less people around with the capability to kill you.
But then there's the other side. There are some "bad apples" around. The longer the server has been around, the more of these that will be collected and having reached higher levels. These people just delight in killing anyone they can kill. They will camp a lower level and not leave them alone. They will kill you 5 times in 5 minutes just because they enjoy being "the bad guy". They find nothing wrong with completely waisting your time and resources cause "its just a game". Those who levelled in the earlier days of a server never had to deal with a huge number of that type of person, as they tend to be cowards around equal level people. But the lower levels of the server "QQ" about them because they do get camped. Unfortunately the high levels say "its not a problem" simply cause they didnt deal with it, and even their alts now have high level protection so it isnt nearly as much of an issue. But the proof is in Lost City server. The lower levels are becoming more of a ghost land then the PvE servers, simply because new people can not level up without harassment.
Lets also take for instance the recent Valentine's event. It involved men having to go to this tiny patch of land to pick roses. The competition for the roses was unreal (poorly planned in my oppinion) as there was only 5 rose spawns & hundreds there trying to get them. On the PvP servers, the high levels camped the patch and just murdered all day long. Of course that was only a few high levels, most didnt bother or care, but as i said above, it only takes a few. If you werent a high lvl, on the PvP servers, you couldnt do the event and survive. There were many saying "we dont kill low levels all day long" from the PvP servers on the forums. But that couldnt be reconciled with the fact that lower levels simply could not live at the flower patch. Yes, most will not try to make lower levels lives hell... but it only takes a few.
Now, i know many on PvP servers, most in fact, are not like that. but the problem is, it only takes a few with that attitude to make life utter hell for low levels. And thats the problem with open free for all pvp without penalty.
I guess what i'm trying to say is; It only takes a few bad apples... (I'd use a stronger term but this is a public forum).0 -

Lol thats 100% true. What you describe is already starting to happen on Harshlands.
I started on harshlands like 5 days after it opened and didn't have to deal with getting pked by 6x people. But it seems thats happening alot now...lvl 50+ people going after 3x over and over.
Just lvl up fast to get into the zones where theres not alot of people.0
