What affects boss drops?

I was thinking of farming the fb29 boss for his molders so I plan on leveling my barb until level 34. However I will be going with a level 49 cleric but only I will attack and he will heal me. This goes to my main question, what affects boss drops? I know it's level but does it matter if I have a really high level in my party and doesn't attack the boss at all? Or does it still affect the drops?

Lvl difference, and server calculations of drop cycles.

Good question.
My guess is that it will affect the drops simply because healing will attract boss aggro. However there's no harm in trying as clearing FB29 mobs is quick and easy.I like pie0 -

I'd be curious what happens to the drop rate if the high-level cleric leaves the squad at the last moment thus allowing the correct-level barb to get the kill "alone."
A lot of people believe the level of the person who lands the final blow makes a difference. I haven't tested it enough to say with much confidence, but the trend I've seen certainly seems to support this. It's easy enough to stop attacking (pet too) at the last moment and let the lowbie finish it off.0 -

I can only second that. I wish people would stop for a moment and perform a sanity check on those rumors before spreading them. Why would ANY sane programmer waste their valuable time by producing lines of code that would do such illogical behavior as this...?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -

If it was truly poor programming, they might of taken an event upon the mob's death, based on the killer and calculate from there =P
If that was truly the case, then those rumours would have some backbone to it.
But I highly doubt this is the case anyways.
It would turn into a poorly made Warcraft III map... hahaha0 -
from personal experience you generally get more DROPS as in things dropping on the floor, including coin (lol) with a team closer to the monsters lvl, but it is in no way a must have for mold drops. i had a lvl 72 barb friend run the 29 repeatedly alone for like a day and he got 2 molds from the boss on his final run.0

I was skeptical about it at first too. Until I ran into this quest:The Perfect Wear
1. Speak to the Celestial Recluse (467, 567) Heaven's Tear
-Collect 15 Heavenwear Fragment (Quest drop from Tauroc Commanders, located at Rook's Valley) RARE DROP Note: Only the person who gets the last hit in can get the quest item, so doing it in a party is mostly meaningless. This is by FAR the most annoying quest in all of PW. Don't worry. There aren't any others as bad as this.
30 minutes and about 20 Commanders later, I still hadn't gotten one damn fragment. I looked them up in pwdatabase and the "drop rate" on the fragments is supposed to be 30%. That would make it a 0.08% chance that what I experienced was due to bad luck. So I changed my strategy and manually ordered my pet to stop attacking when the Commander was nearly dead, and finished it off with my spells. Within an hour I'd gotten all 15 fragments.
So the code to check who gets the last hit on a mob seems to already be in the game. Dunno if it's really used on boss drops, but since the code is already there and the trend I've seen in my fb runs seems to support the theory that it's being used, I just go along with it. (I should mention that when searching for info on the above quest, I ran into a post by a cleric who claimed to have gotten all 15 fragments doing nothing but healing in a squad killing the Commanders. YMMV)
Edit: numbers changed after doing a little sanity checking and deciding my memory of # of kills was flawed.0 -

At first I figured like you did that there's no way the programmers would go about putting in extra code to track who got the last hit in on a mob. I figured it was just a bunch of people coming up with random theories to explain streaks of bad luck. So I started killing Tauroc Commanders with my veno like I usually do - send pet to attack, fire off some spells until mob is almost dead, let pet finish off mob to save mana.
30 minutes and about 45 Commanders later, I still hadn't gotten one damn fragment. I looked them up in pwdatabase and the "drop rate" on the fragments is supposed to be 30%. That would make it a 0.00001% chance that what I experienced was due to bad luck. So I changed my strategy and manually ordered my pet to stop attacking when the Commander was nearly dead, and finished it off with my spells. Within another 30 minutes I'd gotten all 15 fragments.

I read the guide regarding this quest prior doing it and I did the following:
First, I started on my own the the drops were good.
Second, I went on squad and the drops were almost none. I did try doing last hit but it did not work either.
Third, I went back solo and got the drops quick.
Still, this does not mean much since there is a chance factor on this.
What I'm sure. This is the worst quest of all the ones I have done.0 -

It may not be total rubbish. I did not test it and have no intention to test it. But from computer program point of view, there need to be a point of time that program calculate group level to be used to calculate drop rate. The most easy way is do the calculation when the mobs is dead or the first time a attack landed on the mob, average the level when mob is dead and the first time a attack landed is also possible, I do not think there is another way to calculate group level to decide drops, My guess is they are not using average, but difference mob have different data gather point. that’s why we have quest the quest owner have to do the first attack in order to get credit (BloodLust something at Dragon end), and we have quest the quest owner have to do the finish move (Heavenwear Fragment quest). But it can be different for FB, since there is another data gather point for a FB run, the time it opened. If PW calculate the group level when a FB is created, or gather data from every attack, then there is no way around. Otherwise high level player only involved between first attack and the finish move will change the drop rate.0
