Fire shards for a metal attacker?

I'm relatively new to this game, playing a level 35 cleric and it is my first and only character. I recently saved up a lot of coin and bought the Order of the Stars legendary magic sword. The only problem is it already has two average ruby shards fused to it, both giving +32 fire damage. I know that I can purify them and add different shards if I choose to, but my question is this.

How does having +32 fire damage affect someone who is only using metal and physical attack spells? Does it have no effect, or does it add a portion of fire damage to each of my attacks?

Thanks in advance

Elemental shards only affect PHYSICAL damage, and not Plume shot. So they're basically useless for a caster, though you could put them in your armor to get that elemental resistance.

To clarify, the shards only affect attacks, not spells. Plume Shot deals physical damage, but it is a spell, and any other spell will be unaffected by the bonus damage from the Ruby shards. Elemental damage shards on a caster weapon are a waste.

okay thanks for your replies, I'll purify the weapon later, it seems ridiculous to have them on there.

If I then add physical or magic attack shards, how will they affect the spells? Will physical or magic affect plume shot for example? Will neither of the shards affect it?

Thanks again in advance, this is helping me a lot :)

Most spells work off your Magic attack stat. Shards will never affect spell damage directly. Sapphire Shards will increaes your Magic Attack, and therefore your spell damage will increase, regardless of which spell you are using.
