How do you stop attacking?

I have been struggling to learn how to control my normal attack. I usually have to press my attack key several times to start shooting. This seems strange, but I can live with that.

But stopping my attack has similar issues. Sometimes, I can press escape and that will stop my attack, but sometimes that does not work. If I have other windows open they may close, but even if I repeatedly hit escape and keep doing so after I have closed all my chat windows and everything, I still might attack 2-3 times before I can stop. That means 3-4 seconds of attacking, which is too often enough for me to get credit for a kill that I did not want.

Switching targets has similar issues.

This does not feel like lag, because I only notice this issue with my normal attack. (But is there some way to get my lag to display?)

Does anyone else have this issue, and if so, do you have any workarounds?

I think clicking the ground or someplace other than your target helps.

i have a prob kind of like this one...

i press the attack key from the action panel thing and it only attacks once

i press the hotkey again just to hit once, after that i have to press it again and again b:angry

try clicking on the target and once u get the window at the top of the screen that shows the health bar of your target click on them again. (only works with the normal attack) to attack with a spell multiple times u will have to make a macro for it..

because of aggro control mr triple poster, agreed have to WASD sometimes prefer when esc works though

Escape, cancels the attack even while casting, unlike the wasd method.

The Esc is not working
I got 2 hours red because of this, i targeted a somehow low level by mistake and after i hit him the first time i realized it,hit esc and i start talking to him and after a few seconds he droped dead lol
I am 100 % sure that the animation was missing, i never saw using normal attacks on him...

Lol this happens to me alot, esp when i just want to flag someone and i end up killing them..b:cry

And yeah, sometimes my ESC button doesn't work, like i press it multiple times and it still shoots. Also when I move it stops and still shoots.

This works great for annoying people (like that poor beastman that attacked that wraith right before I did), and for getting in trouble. And I am almost sure that the underlying issue has something to do with often normal attack just does not happen (after pressing an attack key once, and sometimes after using certain attack skills), and can sometimes take so long to start. So they probably can not fix this easily.

Also because you can't effectively attack with a ranged weapon, like a bow and arrow when the enemy is standing right in front of you, so you need to stop attacking so that you can put some distance between you and the target.
