*HELP* Does element branch matter?

Hey all. I'm currently lv 45, pure magic buld, and am starting to doupt my wizard. One of my guildies have gave me comments and advice on my wizard, and he said that my skill build is gonna hurt me in future lvs. He said to be strong, a wizard needs to start off by focusing on one element, he for example started out with water, in other words, most of his water skills are maxed, fire is at mid lvs, and earth is at the minium, lv 1. I have been focusing on all three, I currently have 10 Pyrogram, 9 Gush, and 8 StoneRain, Sanstorm, lv 2, Distance Shrink, lv 3, and all 3 "Shield Buffs", which are lv 7 each. Everything else is lv 1. I've seen a wizard, that I'm assuming went with the fire branch, kill the same mobs that I was grinding on with only 4 spells. It took 5 spells to kill the same exact mob, but we killed it around the same time. Please people with experience with the wizard class leave comments on whether an element branch truely affect the way you'll survive in later lvs.

Nah, whoever told you that doesn't know what he is talking about.
While you have to choose what skills are you going to use and which will be useless (To not waste spirit points on something you won't be using), you don't have to follow one element.
Your skills seems alright to me, maybe the fire shield is to high since you won't really use it much. Level the 3 basic skills to level 10 (Pyrogram, gush and Stone rain).0 -
my stone rain still isnt maxed, i just dont use it much, (i have focused on pve dps, so i can level fast to get in the pvp scene)."If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut."b:shutup

From what I can see you've put a bit too much into your shields, and maybe distance shrink. Forget putting any more SP into the fire shield, you may want to increase your water shield depending on how cheap you want to be. Earth Shield is mainly for PvP but it does help you against those pain in the **** archer mobs.
Definately max all your starting element skills, pyro/gush/stone rain, they're your bread and butter and should be maxed regardless of whether you want to specialize in 1 or 2 elements. It's only really when you get to Divine Pyro, Sandstorm and Glacial Snare that you're choosing an element path as you'll find it really hard to level all those at the same time. Most people choose Sandstorm in this case.I like pie0 -

Hehe, cool ^.^ I think I'm going to stop adding skill points into all three shield, because I use Golden Spirit Charms through out this whole character, except for the elder quest and Christmas event. Well, since I've already put points into Sandstorm, I might as well continue . . . What about "Will of the Phoenix", do anyone recommend maxing this skill out?0 -
Max stone barrier.0
-
Will of Phoenix has limited uses.
-dramatically increase dps on bosses
-fast pvp nuke when combined with a decent lvl distance shrink
Also, the above do not matter much until 60+ when you start TT and PvP so don't level it and use the sp elsewhere.
Note that at 60+ almost all mobs have a ranged magic attack so you will rarely ever use it (might as well distance shrink back and cancel their spells while getting in more hits, all for 50 mp).
Also, when going in dungeons with a barb, do not use it except when distance shrink and force of will are in cooldown and you can NOT take two more hits.
You don't want the barb (the only tank that that'll hold aggro from you) to chase the mob all over the place (some bm's I partied with have done this and got my wiz killed as a result of the tank being unable to catch the mob b:sad).0
