Upgrading weapons/armor?

So I think I have heard that you can upgrade stuff with mirage stones. If you do this, does the level or stat requirements go up? Like if i put a mirage stone on my random level 24 weapon that requires x str and x dex, will it change to level 25 and require more str and dex or no?
